Inside the Community BTS Drama: Joel McHale and Chevy Chase's Physical Altercation Unveiled

Discover the intense physical altercation between McHale and Chase behind the scenes of Community.

Community star Joel McHale recently revealed on a podcast his on-set issues with co-star Chevy Chase. The cult favorite sitcom had a rocky start before finding success in season 2 and went on to have six seasons despite facing cancelations. The show is now closer to a hoped-for movie, with almost all cast members confirmed to return except for Chase, whose rise and fall within the show has been extensively covered by co-stars.

McHale, known for his role as Jeff Winger, the de facto study group leader, shared insights on the behind-the-scenes drama on Community during an interview on the podcast Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. The conversation was sparked by Rosenbaum recalling a tense exchange with Chase during a photo-op, to which McHale cryptically responded, "So you saw the good side of him." He then delved into further details about the on-set issues.

In the chapter of my book dedicated to facing him, I discuss the multiple encounters we had. These encounters often involved pushing and shoving, resembling advanced horseplay. However, it was far from enjoyable.

The interactions would sometimes escalate into a contentious atmosphere. I recall a specific incident where things got out of hand and I accidentally dislocated his shoulder, resulting in me getting into trouble.

He recently appeared on Marc Maron's podcast, sparking headlines with his comments about not finding the show funny and not wanting to be there. In response, I simply stated that the feeling was mutual regarding his attitude, and he didn't have to be there.

Throughout his time on Community, Chase made it clear that he did not enjoy being part of the series. He frequently criticized his character's role, claiming it was beneath his talents. In a controversial moment, Chase even used a racial slur against co-star Donald Glover. Glover later referenced this incident during the WGA awards in 2023. Following Chase's character's departure from the show, Glover left Community as well and went on to achieve success in his music, writing, and acting career.

Chase clashed with showrunner Dan Harmon after a tense wrap party where Harmon encouraged the crowd to chant "F*** Chevy," leading Chase to leave an angry voicemail that went viral. Harmon was fired for the next season, while Chase exited after season 4. His final appearance on Community was a hologram in season 5.

Harmon has discussed the potential Community movie and confirmed Chase will not be returning. Pierce, Chase's character, was written off in season 5, so his comeback would be unexpected but not impossible given his history of elaborate schemes. However, it seems the general opinion among the cast is to keep Chase away from the set.
