A gamer has recently stumbled upon their long-lost Nintendo DS in an unexpected location, sixteen years after it initially went missing. Rediscovering the Nintendo DS has evoked a sense of nostalgia and amusement among fans, although this revelation isn't entirely fortunate.
Originally released in 2004, the Nintendo DS quickly became a major success in the handheld gaming market for the company. Its revolutionary dual screens instantly set it apart from the competing PlayStation Portable, and the added advantage of backward compatibility with the Game Boy Advance made it an appealing choice for buyers. While the Nintendo 3DS and Switch have undoubtedly surpassed the Nintendo DS in terms of power and graphics, it was the Nintendo DS that laid the foundation for much of the popularity surrounding these subsequent systems.
One fan had just started enjoying their Nintendo DS as a child when it mysteriously disappeared in 2007. It was believed to have been stolen, but to their surprise, they found it buried on their own property sixteen years later. The device, which was dug up from an old sandbox, showed signs of wear and tear.
Many people were thrilled that the fan, known as Ryebredrox, had found their long-lost Nintendo handheld, but they couldn't help but wonder how it ended up there. One commenter suggested that Ryebredrox's siblings might have had a hand in its disappearance, a theory that the user seemed to agree with. However, the discovery wasn't all good news. After being exposed to soil and moisture for almost two decades, the device was severely rusted both on the outside and inside. According to Ryebredrox, the rusting was so severe that a large part of the motherboard was completely destroyed, making the device unusable. As a humorous side note, Ryebredrox remarked that the Nintendo DS proved to be less resilient than its bomb-proof predecessor, the Game Boy, which had recently been removed from the Nintendo Store in New York.
Nintendo devices are known for their durability, especially considering that they are designed for children who can be rougher with their devices compared to adults. However, they are not completely indestructible, as one unfortunate gamer found out when their Nintendo 3DS was crushed by a recliner. Although it would have been ideal for the Nintendo DS to remain functional, at least Ryebredrox now has some understanding of what caused its downfall.
