In the Works: An Upcoming Poltergeist TV Series

Amazon MGM Studios is working on a chilling TV series inspired by the 80s horror classic, Poltergeist Brace yourself for supernatural thrills and prepare to be haunted by the unknown Get ready to dive into a world where spirits lurk and terror awaits

Amazon is currently in the process of developing a new TV series centered around the popular Poltergeist franchise, aiming to breathe new life into the classic ghost story. Originally released in the summer of 1982, Poltergeist quickly became a notable horror sensation. The movie, which follows the haunting of a house, was both written and produced by Steven Spielberg, with Tobe Hooper, renowned for directing Texas Chain Saw Massacre, taking on the role of director.

The terrifying film was an instant success at the box office, grossing over $120 million with just a $10 million budget, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of the year. Unsurprisingly, the film's popularity led to the creation of sequels, a delayed TV series, and even a star-studded, high-budget remake. Now, Poltergeist is making its way to the streaming platform...

A Poltergeist TV series is in development

According to a report on Variety, there’s a Poltergeist TV series in the works at Amazon MGM Studios.

No writer is currently attached to the project; however, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will oversee the production for Amblin Television. The horror show is part of MGM's efforts to revive several major intellectual properties, including RoboCop, Barbershop, Legally Blonde, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

What is Poltergeist about?

Synopsis for the original Poltergeist: In a calm California suburb, a regular family undergoes a terrifying experience when their residence is infiltrated by a Poltergeist. In the darkness of the night, 10-year-old Carol Anne Freeling hears strange voices emanating from the television...

Initially, the spirits that enter the Freelings' house appear mischievous like children, but their demeanor takes a sinister turn. As Carol Anne is forcefully transported into another realm, Steve and Diane Freeling seek the help of an exorcist in this iconic horror tale.

Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams portrayed the parental characters in the 1982 iteration, whereas Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt assumed the roles in the critically panned 2015 reimagining.

As a Gen Z netizen, I am excited about the upcoming Poltergeist TV series on Amazon MGM Studios. I grew up watching the original Poltergeist movie and its sequels, and I am a big fan of the horror genre. I think it's great that Amazon is reviving this classic franchise for a new generation of viewers.

I'm also intrigued by the fact that there is no writer currently attached to the project. This gives me hope that the show will be fresh and original, and not just a rehash of the original movies. I'm confident that Amazon will find a talented writer who can do justice to the Poltergeist legacy.

Overall, I'm very excited about the upcoming Poltergeist TV series. I think it has the potential to be a great show, and I can't wait to see what Amazon does with it.
