A New Jersey mosque's imam was shot and critically wounded on Wednesday morning, according to Newark police. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. outside the Masjid Muhammad-Newark mosque, as reported by Newark Public Safety.
The imam, a prayer leader at the mosque, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to the agency. The police are currently investigating the incident and no additional details are available at this time.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations' New Jersey branch is urging anyone with information about the shooting to reach out to the police. "We are deeply concerned about this incident and are praying for the speedy recovery of the imam," stated Dina Sayedahmed, spokesperson for CAIR-NJ.
