Illumination Allegedly Presenting Nintendo with Proposal for Super Smash Bros Movie inspired by Avengers

Illumination, the studio behind the Mario Movie, has allegedly approached Nintendo with a proposal for an epic Super Smash Bros crossover film, similar to the Avengers Nintendo is now considering the possibility of giving the green light to this exciting project

Illumination, the studio responsible for The Super Mario Bros Movie, is reportedly proposing an Avengers-style Smash film with several spin-offs. Is a Nintendo Cinematic Universe in the works? After the success of The Mario Movie, fans expected a sequel, but Illumination may have grander plans.

Following the success of the MCU, studios have been attempting to create their own shared universe franchises, with varying degrees of success. This includes the popular Godzilla MonsterVerse and the troubled DCEU. Now, Illumination is reportedly seeking to join the shared universe trend by proposing a Super Smash Bros movie to Nintendo, combining their beloved franchises into a big team-up spectacle.

Nintendo could greenlight a Super Smash Bros movie

The news of a Smash movie was first reported by insider DanielRPK, who claimed that Illumination shared a pitch to Nintendo to create a shared universe.

Similar to the MCU, this project will also need several spin-off films to precede it. Nintendo has confirmed that a live-action Legend of Zelda film is in development, but it may not be included in this particular project. Illumination has reportedly presented a pitch to Nintendo to establish a shared cinematic universe that could lead to a Super Smash Bros film. Super Smash Bros was released on the Nintendo 64 in 1999 with a roster of 12 playable fighters: Mario, Luigi, Link, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Kirby, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Samus, Captain Falcon, Fox, and Ness.

The Mario movie has already introduced several of these characters, leaving franchises such as Star Fox, Earthbound, Metroid, Kirby, F-Zero, and Pokemon. It's worth noting that the latter has already had multiple anime spin-offs and films.

It's worth mentioning that this isn't the first time that a Smash movie has been discussed. Jeff Fowler, director of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, has also expressed interest in making the film, emphasizing the rivalry between the Sega and Nintendo mascots.

2024 will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of Super Smash Bros, and Nintendo is said to be planning multiple announcements to celebrate. Could there even be a movie in the works? We'll just have to wait and see.

Editor's P/S

As a hard fan of Nintendo and Super Smash Bros, I am thrilled by the news of Illumination's proposal for a Super Smash Bros movie inspired by the Avengers. The idea of seeing my favorite characters from different Nintendo franchises come together on the big screen in an epic crossover event is incredibly exciting. I can only imagine the potential for amazing fight scenes, humorous interactions, and heartwarming moments between the characters. The success of the Mario Movie has shown that Illumination understands how to bring Nintendo's beloved characters to life in a way that is both faithful to the source material and appealing to a wide audience.

However, I also recognize that creating a successful shared universe like the MCU is a daunting task. It requires careful planning, strong storytelling, and a commitment to maintaining the integrity of each individual franchise. I trust that Nintendo and Illumination will approach this project with the utmost care and attention to detail to ensure that the Super Smash Bros movie lives up to the expectations of fans worldwide. I eagerly await further news and updates on this exciting development and can't wait to see how this potential Nintendo Cinematic Universe unfolds.
