iFixit's mission is to champion the right to repair. With their commitment to providing tools, parts, and guides for repairing various devices, advocating for Right to Repair legislation, and exposing anti-consumer practices of companies, they strive to promote a future where hardware is more easily fixable. In line with this, iFixit has recently announced a partnership with Microsoft, facilitating the availability of official replacement parts and repair guides specifically tailored for the Microsoft Surface lineup. This collaboration allows Surface users to conveniently fix their devices, with genuine Microsoft replacement parts now accessible for popular models such as the Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5, as well as 13 other Microsoft Surface models. Users can visit the Microsoft Repair Hub to explore a comprehensive selection of compatible devices and parts. The resources provided encompass disassembly videos, detailed guides, troubleshooting assistance, and official Microsoft service manuals, all aimed at aiding users throughout the repair process.
Genuine Microsoft replacement parts are offered in two options: individual components or Fix Kits. The Fix Kits include the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part and all the necessary tools for repairing. This collaboration empowers Surface owners to have greater control over their hardware and also contributes to a more sustainable future by reducing electronic waste. By fixing their hardware, users ensure that it does not end up in a landfill, especially if they decide to sell it afterwards. While some of these components may be expensive, it is still preferable to have an expensive part rather than no part at all.
Previously, iFixit had been highly critical of Microsoft's Surface hardware, particularly in terms of repairability. They strongly criticized the computers for being extremely difficult to access. However, in 2021, iFixit started selling official Surface repair tools (not parts—tools) and Microsoft began making revisions to their products to address repairability concerns. As a result, the Surface Pro 9 received a 7/10 reparability score from iFixit—an improvement compared to previous models, although it is not the most repairable computer available.
Microsoft's partnership indicates a stronger dedication to the right-to-repair movement. If you are someone who enjoys getting hands-on with hardware repairs, this collaboration will likely be embraced wholeheartedly.
