Throughout the narrative, we encounter glimpses of Wonka's background, including his encounter with a captive oompa loompa portrayed by Hugh Grant.
However, Grant himself seems hesitant to take credit for his role. During a press conference to promote the film, the actor admitted to having a less-than-pleasant experience embodying the fantastical creature, going so far as to describe the performance as "drivel."
Grant described the experience of being motion-captured as uncomfortable, comparing it to a crown of thorns. He stated that he was unsure of the process and expressed frustration at not receiving a satisfactory answer. The actor also mentioned that his physical movements were replaced by an animator and even the character's dancing was performed by a CGI team member, which he found disappointing.
Director Paul King explained that Grant's dry sarcasm made him the perfect fit for the role, pointing out that the oompa loompas in the books were described as "incredibly sarcastic and judgmental and cruel." "I was really just thinking about that character," King said. "Somebody who could be a real s**t, and then--ah! Hugh!"
