The Purge franchise follows an annual event where people in the US are allowed to commit crimes such as murder, theft, and chaos for one night - but for how long does this event continue? The New Founding Fathers, a far-right political party that operates on a separate spectrum, proposed a revolutionary solution to address widespread unrest and economic instability.
What if instead of silently defying the law, causing occasional violent outbreaks throughout the year, and contributing to the overflowing prisons and courtrooms, individuals were permitted to engage in any activity of their choosing for one day each year? This could include stealing from their preferred stores, seeking revenge on those who have bullied them, or even committing acts of murder simply because they desire to do so.
With The First Purge securing a spot as one of Netflix's most viewed films, you might be curious: what is the duration of The Purge in the movies?
How long does The Purge last?
The annual Purge lasts for 12 hours. It begins on March 21 at 7pm every year, lasting until 7am the next morning on March 22.
The commencement of the Annual Purge has been announced by the US Government, with sirens wailing across cities and towns, and TVs and radios broadcasting the following message: "This is not a test. This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge sanctioned by the US Government. Weapons of class 4 and lower have been authorized for use during the Purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity from the Purge and shall not be harmed."
"The annual Purge siren marks the beginning of a 12-hour period during which all crime, including murder, is permitted. No police, fire, or emergency medical services will be available until 7am the following morning. This event is sanctioned by the New Founding Fathers of America, and is an opportunity for a nation reborn. Two exceptions have been seen in the franchise: in Election Year, government officials were targeted in an attempt to eliminate Senator Charlie Roan, and in The Forever Purge, civilians continued purging after the allotted 12-hour period."
The First Purge is streaming on Netflix now, which you can find out more about here.

As a Gen Z fan, I find the concept of The Purge to be both intriguing and disturbing. On the one hand, it's an interesting thought experiment to consider what would happen if all laws were suspended for a single night. Would people really let loose and commit heinous acts, or would most people choose to remain peaceful? On the other hand, the idea of a government-sanctioned night of violence is deeply unsettling. It's hard to imagine a society that would willingly embrace such a barbaric practice.
I think the Purge movies are effective in capturing the tension and fear that would likely accompany such an event. The films do a good job of showing how quickly things can spiral out of control when people are given free rein to do whatever they want. They also raise important questions about the nature of violence and the role of government in society. Overall, I think the Purge movies are a thought-provoking and entertaining exploration of a dark and disturbing concept.
