Is House of the Dragon Season 2 happening?

House of the Dragon is returning for Season 2.

House of the Dragon's second season is set to make a comeback following its record-breaking series premiere. The show created immense buzz, garnering unparalleled interest in Europe and captivating nearly 10 million viewers across the United States. In addition, the first episode claimed the title of the most-watched debut on premium cable and streaming platforms in 2022, surpassing its main competitor, Stranger Things Season 4, in the battle for pop-cultural supremacy.

According to a statement from Francesca Orsi, HBO Programming's EVP, Season 1 of House of the Dragon has achieved remarkable success, and we couldn't be prouder of the entire team's efforts.

The cast and crew went above and beyond, surpassing expectations and creating a show that has already become essential viewing. We are immensely grateful to George [R.R. Martin], Ryan [Condal], and Miguel [Sapochnik] for guiding us on this remarkable adventure. We are thrilled to embark on Season 2 and continue bringing the epic saga of House Targaryen to life.

Is there a House of the Dragon Season 2 release date?

House of the Dragon Season 2 will be released in summer 2024.

The latest update comes from Variety, which reported that HBO is targeting a summer 2024 premiere for the second season following the end of the writers’ strike.

The content was never going to arrive significantly earlier. In a recent interview with Vulture, Casey Bloys, the Chief Content Officer of HBO, revealed that they are currently in the early stages of developing a plan for it. Bloys acknowledged the presence of numerous uncertainties, similar to the previous project.

Bloys clarified, “I'm not trying to be evasive or keep secrets, but it would be unwise to specify a release date only to have to change it later… So, it's safe to say that it won't be available in 2023.”

Development for the second season commenced in August of 2022, and filming began on April 11th of this year. Despite the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which caused numerous prominent productions to come to a standstill, House of the Dragon remained unaffected.

Filming for the second season proceeded as scheduled, as mentioned by George R. R. Martin in a blog post on May 8. Martin confirmed that filming began on April 11 and would take place in both London and Wales. The scripts for the eight episodes had been completed months before the strike started. Each episode had undergone multiple revisions and drafts to address feedback from HBO, Martin himself, budget constraints, and other considerations. Martin expressed confidence in the writers and stated that the success of the production now rested in the hands of the directors, cast, crew, and of course, the dragons.

Filming for the series "House of the Dragon" was able to proceed because it includes actors from the UK who are working under Equity contracts, which is a different union from SAG-AFTRA. This means that British labor laws prohibit the Equity actors from going on strike in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA. George R.R. Martin, the creator of the franchise, confirmed on his blog that filming for the show is still ongoing. He stated that the second season is halfway completed. The majority of the shooting takes place in London, with some scenes also being filmed in Wales, Spain, and other locations. The actors are members of the British union, Equity, not SAG-AFTRA. While Equity fully supports their American counterparts and has planned a rally to show this support, they are legally restricted from staging a sympathy strike. If they were to strike, they would not have any protection against being fired for breaching their contracts or even being sued. Personally, Martin mentioned that his overall deal with HBO was put on hold on June 1, but he still has plenty of work to do and considers himself fortunate in that regard.

We’ll update this space upon further announcements.

House of the Dragon Season 2 plot: What will it be about?

Furthermore, Season 2 will bring forth several exciting additions. Initially disclosed by Entertainment Weekly on April 24, the upcoming set of episodes will feature the inclusion of four new actors. The newly cast individuals are outlined below:

House of the Dragon Season 2 plot: What will it be about?

No official plot details have been revealed for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, but we can anticipate a riveting story of war in the next installment. Unlike Game of Thrones, which centered around the threat of the White Walkers and the battle for the Iron Throne, House of the Dragon delves into the Targaryen family's saga.

In November, Graham McTavish, who portrays Ser Harrold Westerling, hinted at the potential events unfolding in Season 2. He stated, "I believe it is leading towards a civil war. Civil war is a common occurrence when countries lack external enemies and engage in internal conflicts to maintain their military expertise. This situation is no different. After a prolonged period of peace, they are now tearing the kingdom apart from within. This upheaval adds an intriguing element to the story, and we can anticipate more division and the formation of factions." Condal, in an interview with Variety, also mentioned that viewers should not anticipate any significant time jumps. He clarified that the storytelling in Season 1 aligns with the narrative style of the original 'Game of Thrones' series.

House of the Dragon Season 2 trailer: Is there a trailer?

At the time of writing, there is currently no trailer available for Season 2 of House of the Dragon. However, it is possible that a trailer will be released later this year.

Production for the show started in early April 2023, as confirmed by a tweet from the official Twitter account of House of the Dragon. Alongside a picture of the Iron Throne, the tweet stated, "It is time to return to King's Landing. Season 2 of House of the Dragon is now in production."

Despite the current WGA writer's strike, HoTD fans were relieved to learn that the show would not halt production as the scripts for Season 2 had been completed for "some time." George R.R. Martin revealed that each episode in Season 2 had undergone four or five drafts and multiple rounds of revisions, taking into account HBO's feedback, his own notes, and budget concerns. He assured fans that there would be no further changes to any of the scripts.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is scheduled to premiere next year and will proceed with filming without any interruptions. Fans can anticipate the release of a trailer before the end of this year.
