Team Cherry's highly anticipated sequel to their beloved debut title, Hollow Knight, remains shrouded in mystery. While the details regarding Hollow Knight Silksong have been closely guarded by Team Cherry, snippets of information have been shared, including enemy designs and musical scores. However, much about the game still remains unknown. Below, we provide a comprehensive overview of everything currently known about Hollow Knight Silksong.
In Silksong, players take on the role of Hornet, a beloved character within the Hollow Knight community. Born out of a magical pact, Hornet is the daughter of the Pale King, the god-like ruler of Hallownest, as well as Herrah the Beast, the spider queen of Deepnest. Wielding a needle and thread, Hornet has made appearances throughout the first Hollow Knight game, first as a boss and later as an ally. Silksong will offer fans the opportunity to play as her for the first time.
Release date
The initial release date for Silksong was set for the first half of 2023. However, in May 2023, Matthew Griffin, a marketing and publishing representative for Team Cherry, announced that development was "still continuing" and that the game would be delayed. As of now, no new release date or launch window has been announced, so we can only hope that 2024 will be the year we finally get to play Silksong.
What we know
Silksong is an action-focused metroidvania game that takes place in the old kingdom of Pharloom. Players will encounter peculiar inhabitants and face off against dangerous insects, arachnids, and annelids as they explore. Along the journey, they will acquire new skills and weapons that unlock previously inaccessible pathways in the interconnected world.
In contrast to the plot of Hollow Knight, where the unnamed knight travels deeper into Hallownest after leaving Dirtmouth, Silksong follows Hornet's journey from the deepest depths of Pharloom to reach the Citadel at the kingdom's highest point. Pharloom is described as a kingdom marked by silk and song and is much more industrialized than Hallownest. It is unclear why Hornet finds herself in Pharloom or if there is any connection to Hallownest, only that she desires to escape it.
Hornet's abilities in Silksong are more advanced than the first game's knight. She can swiftly climb ledges, dash a greater distance, and even heal instantly, including while in midair. Aside from these differences, the gameplay remains similar to the first game.
In an interview featured in Edge Issue #354, game designer Willian Pellen discussed how Hornet's increased height in the upcoming Hollow Knight Silksong game has necessitated adjustments to the game's world and enemy designs. Animator Ari Gibson added that Hornet's fighting style and competence have influenced the way enemies are being designed, resulting in a more physical world that reflects her character.
Upon beginning Silksong, players are thrust into Hornet's daring escape from captivity at the depths of Pharloom. During E3 2019, attendees were able to experience a glimpse of the game through two playable demos. One demo showcased an ambient forest area, while the other took place at a dock surrounded by rivers and geysers of lava. These locations featured increased verticality and open space compared to those in Hollow Knight. Additionally, enemies were more agile and aggressive, posing a new challenge for players. Adapting to Hornet's unique movement, especially her diagonal dive attack, initially proved to be a challenge. However, once players became accustomed to her abilities, the gameplay became highly enjoyable.

Silksong has been officially announced for release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC. Furthermore, on Xbox and PC, Silksong will be accessible through Xbox Game Pass from the first day of its release.

The specific system specifications for Silksong have not yet been disclosed.
Trailers
Two trailers have been released for Silksong. The first trailer, unveiled in February 2019, features Hornet being taken to Pharloom while in captivity, before escaping and beginning her ascent towards the Citadel. This provided the initial glimpse into Silksong's gameplay.
The trailer for 2022's Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase unveiled the exciting news that Silksong would be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. It also demonstrated the significant progress made in the three years of relative silence from Team Cherry. Hornet's movements appear much crisper, and both the enemy and level design have been enhanced to accommodate Hornet's agile fighting style.

DLC/Microtransaction details
Team Cherry has not yet announced whether Silksong will receive post-launch DLC, but considering the success of the first Hollow Knight, it is likely that the sequel will also receive additional content after release. Following the launch of Hollow Knight, the game received four significant updates. Hidden Dreams introduced more bosses and a new fast travel system, The Grimm Troupe added new story chapters and NPCs, Lifeblood made major balancing adjustments, and Godmaster included a boss rush and new story endings. Originally intended to be the fifth and final expansion, Silksong grew so large that Team Cherry decided to develop it into its own standalone game.
Editor's P/S
As a hard fan of Hollow Knight, I am eagerly anticipating the release of Hollow Knight Silksong. The original game was a masterpiece of metroidvania design, and I can't wait to see what Team Cherry has in store for us with the sequel. I'm particularly excited to play as Hornet, who was a fascinating and enigmatic character in the first game. I'm also intrigued by the new setting of Pharloom, which seems to be a much more vibrant and colorful world than Hallownest.
I'm confident that Hollow Knight Silksong will live up to the high expectations that fans have set for it. Team Cherry has a proven track record of creating high-quality games, and I'm sure that they'll deliver another amazing experience with Silksong. I can't wait to get my hands on the game and explore the world of Pharloom for myself.
