In Hogwarts Legacy, players will encounter Ominis Gaunt, a character who has caught the attention of a sharp-eyed fan due to a potential plot hole. It's worth noting that Ominis is not only a descendant of Salazar Slytherin, the founder of the infamous Hogwarts house, but he's also related to the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, also known as Tom Marvolo Riddle. The game is set in the late 1800s, prior to Voldemort's birth in 1925. While the events in the game take place before Voldemort and his Death Eaters committed their atrocities, the House of Gaunt was a family of pure-blood wizards who were fixated on maintaining their status. This led to the family marrying within itself to keep their bloodline "pure", ultimately contributing to their demise, with only Voldemort's grandfather, mother, and uncle surviving by 1925.
One Reddit user, atzijeslavie, raised an interesting point about the portrayal of Hogwarts Legacy character Ominis Gaunt. Given his family's inbreeding to maintain pure-blood status, it was suggested that Ominis should have been depicted as "weirder". This is because his relatives, including Voldemort's grandfather, mother, and uncle, were all mentally unstable and unattractive as a result of this practice. However, Ominis appears relatively normal-looking and can show empathy and compassion. In fact, he was even tortured for refusing to perform the Cruciatus Curse on Muggles, which his family did purely for entertainment.
Although the Harry Potter book series, which is considered the main source of canon, is clear that the Gaunt family had all but died out by the time Voldemort was born, it is unclear if Ominis was still alive or not. Some speculate that he may have been disowned or chose to distance himself from the family by taking another name. Others suggest that fellow Hogwarts Legacy character Sebastian Sallow may have eventually sought revenge and killed him.
There is a possibility that Ominis' fate may be revealed in future Hogwarts Legacy DLC releases, but no official information has been released regarding this character's future. Hogwarts Legacy is currently available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch release set for November 14.
