Christie's auction house has announced that an untitled painting by Claude Monet, which has never been seen before, is set to be sold in New York next month for a staggering amount exceeding $65 million. The artwork, measuring two meters in width, is a captivating addition to Monet's renowned "Water Lilies" collection, showcasing the enchanting dance of light on the water's surface, reflecting the delicate beauty of water lilies and willow trees.
This artwork, painted between 1917 and 1919, falls under the later phase of Monet's life. During this time, he created a series of paintings featuring water lilies that are now exhibited in various museums across the globe.
According to Christies statement, this painting beautifully captures the fleeting essence of nature, showcasing the dynamic and captivating elements such as the changing atmosphere, seasonal blossoms, shimmering reflections of light, and the depths of the water.

Scientists confirm long held theory about what inspired Monet
The painting had been in the same family collection for over 50 years, perfectly preserved and concealed, according to Max Carter, Christies Vice Chairman of 20th and 21st Century Art. Carter stated that with Monet, it seems like everything has already been seen or said, but "Le bassin aux nymphéas", which has never been displayed or sold at auction, is a truly rare find - a rediscovered masterpiece.
The artwork will be presented for auction at Christies' evening sale of 20th-century works on November 9th.
Monet, a prominent figure in the Impressionist movement, had a profound influence on the art community, inspiring his contemporaries like Vincent van Gogh and later impacting Abstract Expressionist painters such as Jackson Pollock.
His paintings have become iconic representations of Impressionism, overcoming initial mixed reception to become globally renowned and highly identifiable works of art.
Monet's notable paintings have previously achieved staggering prices at auctions. For instance, a piece from his "Water Lilies" series fetched $84.7 million at Christies in May 2018, and a painting from the "Haystacks" series sold for $110.7 million at Sothebys a year later.
