Heidi Montag, 37, has made her return to the music scene with the release of a new single on Friday, December 8. The track, titled "Bad Boy," was initially meant to be a follow-up to her 2010 debut album, Superficial, and signals Montag's reemergence into the pop genre.
" 'Bad Boy' has always been a favorite of mine, so I'm thrilled to release it," Montag said in an interview with Paper magazine published on Friday. She also mentioned that she didn't expect Superficial to be her only album, saying, "We always thought we would continue on a music journey, and maybe 'Bad Boy' would be on the next album. It's just that life didn't really unfold as we had anticipated."
Superficial did not receive the critical praise that Montag had anticipated, but earlier this year, her music experienced an unexpected revival. Following the use of her song "I'll Do It" as runway music during Paris Fashion Week in January 2023, the track went viral on TikTok and remains a popular sound on the app.
"I was incredibly grateful for that," Montag expressed regarding the Fashion Week moment. "Then TikTok really embraced the song, almost simultaneously. It has taken on a life of its own. In China, it gets over 20 million streams per day or even more."

Following the excitement surrounding “I’ll Do It,” the artist unveiled two revamped editions of the track in May 2023. Following the release of “Bad Boy,” Montag disclosed to Paper that she intends to release additional songs from her collection of previously unreleased tracks.
Upon reflection, Montag believes that Superficial did not achieve success due to her public image at the time of its release. On The Hills, she openly discussed her dramatic plastic surgery journey, which resulted in harsh criticism. Additionally, the series portrayed her as a villain during her ongoing conflict with costar Lauren Conrad.

At the time, I felt incredibly let down by my surgeries and the ending of The Hills," she said. "It felt like everything was coming to a harsh conclusion. When my album Superficial didn't perform as well as I had hoped, it was all just too much to bear. Looking back, I realize now that the album was really fantastic. If it had been released by anyone else, it would have been a chart-topper."
Since her time on The Hills, Montag has been a part of the MTV series' reboot The Hills: New Beginnings. The show aired from 2019 to 2021. In 2009, she married Spencer Pratt, whom she met on The Hills in 2006. They have since welcomed two sons: Gunner Ryker in 2017 and another in 2022.
