Highlights
In the Harry Potter movies, the relationship between Neville and Luna was downplayed, but in Deathly Hallows: Part 2, a romantic subplot was introduced.
After the Battle of Hogwarts, Neville followed a path of teaching at Hogwarts, serving as a Herbology professor before eventually rising to the position of Head of Gryffindor.
Luna, on the other hand, embarked on a journey of becoming a renowned wizarding naturalist, voyaging across the globe. In due course, she found love in the arms of Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander himself. Together, they were blessed with twin sons named Lorcan and Lysander.
The Harry Potter movies often deviated from the books, resulting in numerous changes. However, an intriguing adjustment can be observed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, specifically regarding Neville and Luna's relationship. While their close friendship was often overlooked in the movies, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 introduced a captivating romantic subplot between them.
During the Battle of Hogwarts, Neville urgently approaches Harry and inquires about Luna's whereabouts. Harry, visibly confused by Neville's sudden desperation, receives an unexpected response: "I'm crazy about her! I believe it's high time I confess since we'll most likely both be dead by dawn." Following the battle, Neville and Luna are seen sitting together, radiating with smiles. After witnessing this scene, it is understandable that fans assumed the two ended up together. However, the question remains: do Neville and Luna actually tie the knot?
What Happened to Neville and Luna After the Battle of Hogwarts?
Throughout the series, Neville and Luna were often marginalized due to their eccentricities, which caused them to stand out from their peers and become targets of bullying. Moreover, both of them had endured tragic pasts, with Luna losing her mother at a young age and Neville's parents suffering from memory loss after being tortured by Death Eaters. Their profound understanding and empathy for each other's pain led some fans to believe that they were the perfect match, and they were thrilled when the movies hinted at a romantic connection between them.
However, contrary to popular belief, Neville and Luna did not end up together. Unfortunately, after the Battle of Hogwarts, they grew apart and pursued their separate paths. So, what exactly transpired in their lives after the events of the Second Wizarding War?
After Voldemort's defeat, Neville briefly served as an Auror before embarking on a teaching career at Hogwarts. Choosing Herbology as his field of expertise, Neville became a beloved professor, renowned for his skills and popularity. Proud of his contributions during the Second Wizarding War, he often proudly displayed his Dumbledore's Army badge to inspire his students. Neville's teaching journey is referenced in the Deathly Hallows’ epilogue, where James Potter respectfully addresses him as 'Professor Longbottom'. Following Minerva McGonagall's appointment as Hogwarts' Headmistress, Neville assumed the esteemed position of Head of Gryffindor, embodying the house's virtues of courage and resilience.
In contrast, Luna bid farewell to her days at Hogwarts and pursued a successful career as a distinguished wizarding naturalist. Traveling the world, she made significant discoveries of new magical creatures, showcasing her profound affection for animals, as evident in her teachings about Thestrals to Harry. This gratifying conclusion fulfilled Luna's story. Although Neville and Luna didn't end up together romantically, they both found love with other individuals. Now the question remains: who did Neville and Luna ultimately marry?
Who Does Neville Marry?
After the Second Wizarding War, Neville eventually ties the knot with Hannah Abbott, a former Hogwarts student who belonged to the house of Hufflepuff. Hannah, like Neville, was part of Dumbledore's Army and her name is often mentioned in the book series, notably in the Order of the Phoenix. Tragedy also struck Hannah during her time at Hogwarts, as her mother was sadly killed by Death Eaters during her sixth year. The Half-Blood Prince describes the devastating event: "The day before, a dreadful incident occurred, wherein Hannah Abbott was called out during Herbology class only to be informed of her mother's untimely demise. Since then, she has not been seen." Despite her loss, Hannah displayed immense bravery by reuniting with Dumbledore's Army and fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts, even after being initially pulled out of Hogwarts.
During her later life, Hannah took on the role of the landlady of the renowned Leaky Cauldron pub. Throughout this period, both she and Neville resided above the pub. Nonetheless, Hannah pursued a career as a Healer and applied for the esteemed position of Matron at Hogwarts. It's intriguing how both Hannah and Neville found themselves returning to Hogwarts, effectively highlighting their similarities. Fans have also astutely observed how Neville possesses many of Hufflepuff's fundamental qualities, thus making him and Hannah appear to be a potentially excellent match.
Who Does Luna Marry?
Luna's love life took a delightful turn in her later years as she tied the knot with Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander. Emulating his esteemed grandfather, Rolf was an avid enthusiast of wizarding naturalism and shared Luna's profound fascination for magical creatures. Together, they embraced the joys of parenthood and welcomed twin sons, Lorcan and Lysander.
Luna and Rolf's relationship remains a mystery, but it is evident that they shared many similarities and were well-suited for each other. The Harry Potter series has faced criticism for hastily and somewhat awkwardly developing romances, including those between Harry and Ginny, as well as Ron and Hermione to some extent. Thus, it is gratifying to know that Neville and Luna's subsequent marriages did not fall into this pattern.
Even Evanna Lynch, the actress who portrayed Luna in the movies, acknowledged that Luna and Neville's romance would not have been successful. In an interview with Seventeen, Lynch described Neville as a "homebody" and someone who prefers domestic life, whereas Luna's adventurous spirit seeks to explore new realms and creatures. While many fans believe that the two characters were a perfect match, it appears that Luna would have had to compromise her unique eccentricity if she had chosen to marry Neville, who portrays a more conventional nature by comparison. Despite the end of Luna and Neville's relationship, it is evident that both characters found happiness in their separate paths.
