David Yates, the director of multiple Harry Potter films, has expressed that he is not interested in returning for the upcoming Harry Potter reboot series on Max.

Yates disclosed that he has already dedicated a substantial amount of time delving into the realm of Harry Potter and now perceives himself to have outgrown it.

However, despite his choice to disassociate himself, Yates extends his best wishes to the forthcoming series and holds the belief that it will prove to be a thrilling endeavor for the next wave of filmmakers.

David Yates, the director behind half of the Harry Potter film adaptations and each of the Fantastic Beasts movies, has revealed his lack of interest in the upcoming Harry Potter reboot. He explained his reasons for not envisioning a return in the development of the Max TV series.

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series saw immense success when it was adapted into eight feature films, each of which achieved remarkable box office numbers, grossing at least $750 million. Following the mainline film adaptations, there was a trilogy of Fantastic Beasts films that received mixed reviews. Although some believed that The Secrets of Dumbledore marked the end of the franchise, Warner Bros, the custodians of the intellectual property, had a different plan. They announced a rebooted adaptation, this time as a series for their streaming platform Max.

Since then, rumors have been swirling about the potential return of David Yates, the beloved director of the second half of the mainline film trilogy and the Fantastic Beasts film series in the Harry Potter franchise. In a recent interview with ComicBook, when asked about the possibility of working on the upcoming Harry Potter reboot, Yates candidly shared his thoughts. "Honestly, I could not, in any conceivable way, get involved," he revealed. "Having spent a significant amount of time at that school, in those corridors, and in those classrooms, it was an extraordinary experience that I will always cherish. However, returning for another year or two feels like a chapter I have left behind."

Yates, who ensured that Harry Potter remained great despite changing directors, mentioned his interest in pursuing other projects. He expressed that he finds the idea of making a drama while on the road with producer Lawrence in Atlanta or Savannah to be more appealing at the moment than returning to Hogwarts. However, he also expressed his well wishes for the Harry Potter reboot on Max, acknowledging the excitement and anticipation surrounding it. Many fans believe that a series format will provide a more faithful adaptation of the source material and allow for the exploration of characters and concepts that were limited in the film format. Although Yates is highly regarded in the fandom, his experience primarily lies in filmmaking rather than television. Moreover, his previous experience directing the Fantastic Beasts films may have influenced his decision to pursue new endeavors.

The Harry Potter franchise is currently available for streaming on Max.
