Hades 2: Unveiling the Latest Updates on Supergiant's Highly Anticipated Roguelike Sequel

Hades II, the highly anticipated sequel by Supergiant, will follow in the footsteps of its predecessor with an early access release Discover the release date, platforms, system specs, exciting trailers, and delve into the intriguing details of DLC and microtransactions

Supergiant Games is breaking new ground with their first direct sequel, Hades II, following the success of their 2020 roguelike game, Hades. In this article, we will cover all the details we have about Hades II, including its release date and compatible systems.

If you haven't experienced the original Hades, now is the perfect time to do so before the sequel arrives. Hades stood out in 2020 as one of the top games, using the elements of a roguelike to offer an original approach to storytelling through a dynamic script that very few other games have been able to achieve. Additionally, it boasts exceptional music and voice acting, along with stunning artwork that reimagines the Greek pantheon.

Release date

The official launch date for Hades II is still uncertain, but the game is set to be released in early access in Q2 2024. The original Hades was in early access for nearly two years, first released in December 2018 for PC before officially launching for PC and Switch in September 2020, and later for Xbox and PlayStation in September 2021.

In a recent development update, Supergiant Games stated, "Hades II will have at least as much content from day one in early access as the original game did when it launched in Early Access on Steam. And, even though early access inherently means a game is not yet complete, we still want to do everything we can to make sure Hades II is worth your while as soon as you can play it in any capacity."

It is likely that Hades II will have a shorter early access period due to Supergiant building on an established formula. The studio has acknowledged the importance of early access and believes that the planned timeframe will be the 'sweet spot' for player feedback. After the early access launch, Hades II will receive multiple content updates, including new story events, characters, weapons, environments, and musical scores. The final 1.0 launch update will conclude Hades II's story.

What we know

Playing as Melinoë, the sister of Hades protagonist Zagreus, in the game Hades II introduces a new dynamic to the Greek myth of their relationship. While most versions depict them as half-siblings, with the same mother (Persephone) but different fathers, there are variations where they are both children of Hades. The game's release trailer hints at this, showing Hades in chains while Melinoë mentions coming to save her father. However, knowing the storytelling style of Supergiant, it's wise to approach this with caution. The original Hades also used misdirection, so the true nature of Hades II will only become clear when experienced firsthand.

Contrary to Zagreus, who is working his way upwards from the Underworld to the surface, Melinoë is beginning her quest close to the surface and aiming to journey deeper into the Underworld in a mission to find and defeat Chronos, the titan who has her father held captive. She is supported by the goddess of witchcraft Hecate, the god of light Apollo, the personifications of doom Moros, retribution Nemesis, and various other specters, gods, and titans.

In terms of gameplay, Hades II closely resembles its predecessor. It is a roguelike action game where players battle through enemy-filled rooms, upgrade weapons, and utilize the boons and magic of different mythological figures. Players also uncover the tangled family dramas of the Greek pantheon. Although players gain permanent upgrades with each run, their progress toward reaching Chronos and the boons they possess resets with each death, challenging them to adapt with each attempt as they strive to progress further.

Platforms

Hades II has currently only been confirmed for release on PC, available on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Additional platform releases have not yet been announced. Given the success of the original Hades, it is likely that Hades II will eventually become available on the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and possibly even the rumored Switch 2, but nothing is confirmed until Supergiant makes an official announcement.

PC system specs

In a recent development blog post, Supergiant Games mentioned that they will reveal the PC system requirements for Hades II closer to the game's early access launch.

DLC/Microtransaction details

The original Hades (and all of Supergiant's previous games) did not have post-launch DLC or feature microtransactions so, presumably, Hades II won't either.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan, I am incredibly excited about the upcoming release of Hades II. The original Hades was a masterpiece, and I can't wait to see what Supergiant Games has in store for us with the sequel. I love the new protagonist, Melinoë, and I'm intrigued by the story of her quest to save her father, Hades. The gameplay looks just as fun and challenging as the original, and I can't wait to dive into the new weapons, abilities, and enemies. I also appreciate Supergiant's commitment to early access and their focus on player feedback. I believe that this will help to make Hades II an even better game than its predecessor.

Overall, I am very optimistic about Hades II and I believe that it has the potential to be one of the best games of 2024. I can't wait to get my hands on it and experience the next chapter in the story of the Greek gods.
