Devastating Loss: The Walking Dead's Dead City Faces Heartbreak as Beloved Characters Amaia & Tommaso Meet Tragic Deaths, Leaving Fans Gripped with Emotion

Warning: Spoilers ahead for episode 5 of The Walking Dead: Dead City! Karina Ortiz, star of The Walking Dead: Dead City, details Amaia's tragic demise in the latest episode. Amaia, once the leader of a rebel group opposing The Croat's authority in Manhattan, becomes the sole survivor alongside her boyfriend, Tommaso, following an ambush at The Croat's arena. However, Amaia's world is shattered when she discovers that Tommaso was the betrayer, moments before she is torn apart by Walkers in the sewers.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Ortiz discloses Amaia's final thoughts in The Walking Dead: Dead City prior to her demise. The actress reveals that Amaia had resigned herself to her fate, having endured the loss of her family and finding herself trapped in a dire situation. Read below for Ortiz's exact words.

Why Amaia & Tommaso's Deaths In Dead City Are So Tragic

I believe that she did not have sufficient time to reconcile with him. It appears to me that she was still actively trying to come to terms with the situation, especially considering her struggle to breathe due to the presence of methane. In that particular moment, she seemed to have reached a point where she was almost ready to give up, primarily because we had just experienced the loss of everyone from our tribe, which is an immensely burdensome situation to endure.

As Amaia is tragically torn apart, Maggie witnesses another devastating loss: Tommaso's demise caused by a lurking Walker in the sewers. With the absence of Amaia and Tommaso, their entire survivor family, once committed to thwarting The Croat, has perished. Consequently, all the tireless years they devoted to preventing The Croat from gaining further control in Manhattan prove futile, ultimately thwarted by Tommaso's treachery.

However, the twist in The Walking Dead: Dead City involving Maggie and Negan also implicates Maggie in the deaths of Amaia and Tommaso. In episode 5, it is revealed that Maggie brought Negan to New York City with the intention of trading him to The Croat in exchange for Hershel. This revelation suggests that Maggie could have avoided launching an attack on The Croat's arena if she had chosen not to. As a result, Maggie bears some responsibility for the destruction of the rebel group.

Now that Amaia and Tommaso have died, episode 6 of The Walking Dead: Dead City will likely focus on the culmination of Maggie and Negan's contentious relationship. It remains uncertain if more deaths are imminent, and if they will be as emotionally devastating as Amaia's demise. However, given that episode 6 serves as the finale for season 1, it is highly likely that another unexpected death is on the horizon.
