Summary
Despite its poor reputation and box office failure, the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie is receiving an expensive 4K anniversary release.
The movie's lack of success can be attributed to its failure to align with the original material, as it showcased a dystopian universe rather than the vibrant and soothing Mushroom Kingdom.
The live-action adaptation neglected to take into account its target audience, making the storyline convoluted and overlooking the chance to faithfully translate the Super Mario universe.
To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the live-action film adaptation of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. video game franchise is receiving a lavish 4K release. The 1993 movie, starring Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, depicted the brothers facing increasingly absurd challenges. Despite its commercial failure, grossing only $38.9 million against a $40 million budget, the franchise has undergone a successful reboot in animated form. The latest installment, led by Chris Pratt, amassed an impressive $1.3 billion at the box office. In spite of its negative reputation, the Super Mario Bros. movie is scheduled to receive a special anniversary release from Umbrella Home Entertainment. The extensive box set includes a 4K Ultra HD edition of the film, featuring three discs, two Blu-rays, behind-the-scenes books, a film cell, posters, stickers, art cards, new audio commentary, and newly-restored deleted scenes and trailers. Priced at a substantial $100, the box set is slated for release in January 2024. For a glimpse of the box set's artwork, refer to the gallery below.
