Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie, recently shared the inspiration behind the iconic scene-changing montage in the film. Despite being a summer blockbuster, the film continues to receive rave reviews from audiences as we head into the winter season.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star as Barbie and Ken in a stunning display of embracing the human spirit and breaking free from others' expectations. Director Greta Gerwig has been promoting the HBO Max streaming release with behind-the-scenes insights into her creative vision for the film.
Gerwig drew inspiration from an unlikely source
The Barbie director recently sat down with Lawrence Sher of ShotDeck to discuss her process of putting together the set production.
Asked about the inspiration behind the iconic traveling montage featuring Barbie and Ken's journey to the Real World, Gerwig revealed that she drew inspiration from the ever-changing scenery in old Old Spice commercials. "I love those commercials," Gerwig shared, "I actually spoke to the director and asked 'how did you do that?' and he replied 'we did it 116 times.' It was truly amazing, but I knew we wouldn't have that kind of time."
Gerwig expressed her admiration for the idea board created by the art department to visualize the different flat backgrounds on film. She also mentioned that sets were made with three planes of movement to demonstrate the potential outcome.
Barbie and her human companions had a memorable travel experience in Barbie Land, biking, hiking, camping, surfing, and even riding a rocket. If you want to read more about Dexerto's TV and movie coverage, click here.

As a Gen Z fan, I am thrilled to hear about the inspiration behind Greta Gerwig's Barbie travel scene. The idea of drawing inspiration from Old Spice commercials is both unexpected and exciting. It shows that Gerwig is not afraid to think outside the box and find creative solutions to bring her vision to life. I can't wait to see how this unique approach translates into the final film and how it contributes to the overall narrative.
The fact that Gerwig took the time to speak with the director of the Old Spice commercials and learn about their process demonstrates her dedication to her craft and her willingness to collaborate with others. It also highlights her appreciation for the art of filmmaking and her desire to create something truly special. I believe that this kind of attention to detail and passion for storytelling will result in a film that resonates with audiences and leaves a lasting impact.
