Opinions are divided on the comparison between the new trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire and Godzilla Minus One. Both films are produced by Legendary Pictures and Toho Studios, but they exist in separate continuities.
The MonsterVerse canon began with Gareth Edwards’ 2014 blockbuster, Godzilla, and now continues with Godzilla x Kong. Meanwhile, Godzilla Minus One is a standalone story that draws inspiration from plot points and themes from Toho’s original Godzilla movie.
The highly anticipated Godzilla x Kong trailer was released on December 3, just two days after Godzilla Minus One received widespread critical acclaim following its international premiere.
Godzilla x Kong divides fans amid Minus One success
The release of the Godzilla x Kong’s trailer and Godzilla Minus One’s release prompted numerous fans to make comparisons between the two kaiju epics on social media.
Numerous analysts have firmly sided with Godzilla x Kong, praising the trailer as proof of the upcoming MonsterVerse installment's superiority over Godzilla Minus One. "Already better than Godzilla Minus One," one X user proclaimed. "What a disaster that movie was. Barely any action and the city rampage was over in just 2 minutes."
"The Godzilla x Kong movie looks amazing," a second person commented. "It may be silly, but the concept of a city-sized radioactive dinosaur shooting lasers from its mouth is inherently silly. Also, with Minus One and Monarch being more serious projects, it's okay to have some fun with this one."
However, not everyone was convinced. "Godzilla Minus One was so incredibly good that it's difficult to compare," one user expressed. "I'll still watch this new one because I love all things Godzilla. But... the trailer didn't really excite me." Another person added, "[Godzilla Minus One's $15 million budget] looks much better compared to the probably $200 million cost of [Godzilla x Kong]."
Fans goggle at Godzilla Minus One’s budget
The budget of Godzilla Minus One has been a topic of online conversation before. Fans have consistently praised Toho's 33rd Godzilla film for exceeding expectations despite its budget, comparing it favorably to more expensive Hollywood productions.
"It's about time we start re-evaluating Hollywood production budgets," one fan declared. "It's incredible what careful planning and avoiding reshoots can do for artistic quality and the budget," echoed a second, with a third praising Toho's achievement as "amazing."

Editor's P/S
As an enthusiastic fan, I'm thrilled to see the release of the new trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The trailer looks amazing, and I can't wait to see these two iconic monsters battle it out on the big screen. However, I'm also a big fan of Godzilla Minus One, and I think it's unfair to compare the two films. Godzilla Minus One is a much smaller, more personal film, while Godzilla x Kong is a big, blockbuster event. They're both great films, but they're just different.
I think it's important to appreciate both films for what they are. Godzilla Minus One is a great example of how to make a great film on a small budget, while Godzilla x Kong is a great example of how to make a big, blockbuster event. I'm excited to see both films when they come out, and I think fans of both Godzilla and Kong will enjoy them both.
