Godzilla Slays the Critics, Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes

Godzilla Minus One dominates the US box office while securing the top rating on Rotten Tomatoes, achieving Certified Fresh status

Minus One, the 33rd entry in Toho Studios' Godzilla franchise, has recently achieved the highest rating on the review aggregator platform Rotten Tomatoes. The film premiered in Japan on November 3 and made its international debut on December 1.

The film has been enthusiastically praised by critics as a reboot of Toho's original 1954 Godzilla movie. As a result, Godzilla Minus One held a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score for most of the month, but a few negative reviews brought it down from its perfect score.

Godzilla Minus One is finally Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes

The kaiju blockbuster didn’t miss the mark by much. At present, Godzilla Minus One boasts an impressive 96% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 85 reviews. Additionally, the creature feature has garnered enough positive feedback to earn the platform's coveted "Certified Fresh" rating.

In our review, we called it a “lovingly crafted, thoughtful blockbuster that should appeal to purists and casual viewers alike.”

The 85 reviews gathered by Rotten Tomatoes highlight the successful balance in Godzilla Minus One between its impressive set pieces and emotional depth. Among these reviewers, Variety's Richard Kuipers was particularly impressed with the film, stating that "Takashi Yamazaki’s reboot brings back the basics in a grand and captivating way, combining compelling human drama with breathtaking mass destruction."

Bob Strauss from The San Francisco Chronicle was also impressed, stating that it has taken 69 years, but there is finally a Godzilla movie with compelling human interest. Meanwhile, Eric Francisco of Inverse was even more enthralled than Kuipers and Strauss, declaring Toho’s latest Godzilla film as one of the best in the kaiju genre since the franchise began in 1954 with Ishiro Honda’s Gojira.
