Godzilla Film: Unbelievable Scene Achieved without VFX, Actor Confirms

Kamiki Ryunosuke from Godzilla Minus One spills the beans on an awe-inspiring scene that defied expectations by relying on minimal VFX The film earns rave reviews from both critics and fellow filmmakers

Kamiki Ryunosuke, who plays a role in Godzilla Minus One, has recently revealed that one of the movie's most memorable scenes does not heavily rely on visual effects (VFX).

Toho Studios' Godzilla Minus One is the 33rd installment in the iconic Godzilla series. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film serves as both a reboot and a remake, while also commemorating the franchise's 70th anniversary in advance.

Predicable, the trailers for Godzilla Minus One, which were released internationally in December, predominantly highlighted the film's action-packed sequences driven by advanced CGI. These mesmerizing scenes depict Godzilla unleashing destruction in postwar Tokyo and wreaking havoc in the sea.

From the preview footage, it becomes evident that the visuals in Godzilla Minus One far surpass those of the original 1954 movie. However, Ryunosuke reveals that the cast and crew managed to capture a significant portion of at least one major scene using practical effects.

Godzilla Minus One actor reveals insane scene didn’t use VFX

Following the US premiere of Godzilla Minus One, Ryunosuke confirmed during a Q&A session (via Popverse) that the ocean scenes in the film were authentic, with the exception of the shots involving Godzilla himself.

"People in Japan would often exclaim, 'Wow! The ocean scenes were absolutely incredible! They appeared so authentic, with stunning visual effects!' But no, they were not CGI. They were real," he emphasized. "During the scene where we were battling Godzilla, we were actually in the ocean!"

Critics and filmmakers alike praise Godzilla Minus One

Ryunosuke mentioned that filming the water scenes for Godzilla Minus One was the most challenging task, possibly clarifying his determination to correct any misconceptions. The renowned Japanese actor opted not to disclose the precise duration he spent shooting on a boat during principal photography.

Ryunosuke's struggle in the ocean proved to be worthwhile when considering the critical reception of Godzilla Minus One. The film currently boasts a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, albeit based on just seven reviews.

Not only are audiences praising the reboot, but other filmmakers, such as Gareth Edwards, who helmed the 2014 film Godzilla, are also impressed. In a recent interview, Edwards hailed Godzilla Minus One as the epitome of what a Godzilla movie should be.
