On the tenth anniversary of his passing, Lea Michele, known for her role in Glee, has offered a poignant tribute to the late Cory Monteith. Monteith, who portrayed the character of Finn Hudson, a football quarterback, in the popular musical comedy series for the first four seasons, tragically passed away at the age of 31 due to a drug overdose in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13, 2013. Michele's recent heartfelt social media post serves as a touching homage to Monteith's life.
How Glee Changed After Cory Monteith's Death
Their heartfelt post showcases a poignant black-and-white photograph capturing the endearing bond between Monteith and Michele. Accompanied by a tender caption, it reads, "Within the depths of my heart, cherished memories reside, safeguarded and everlastingly etched in our souls." Added to that, the words "Each passing day, our yearning for you intensifies."
Prior to his involvement in Glee, Monteith had established himself through notable roles in various movies and TV shows. Some of these include Stargate Atlantis, Smallville, Final Destination 3, Kyle XY, and Deck the Halls. However, it was his portrayal of Finn that truly defined his career, as his character became synonymous with the show itself. Finn's central position in the storyline and his pivotal role in uniting the glee club New Directions in the pilot episode solidified Monteith's presence on Glee.
Content was greatly impacted after Monteith's death, as shown in the controversial Glee documentary The Price of Glee. The tribute episode in season 5, titled "The Quarterback," was followed by a struggle to fill the void left by Finn's absence, resulting in a shortened season 6. Finn's relationship with Rachel Berry, portrayed by Michele, was a crucial element of the show's storyline, and its absence significantly altered the series. Co-creator Ryan Murphy recently expressed regret on the Glee rewatch podcast And That's What You REALLY Missed, suggesting that the show should have concluded with season 4 instead of continuing without Finn. He stated that the essence and happiness of the show vanished.
