A state prosecutor is looking into whether Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones broke the law by trying to help former President Donald Trump undermine the 2020 election results in the state.
Peter Skandalakis, who is the director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, has taken on the task of investigating this issue, as stated in a news release.
Jones, a Republican, was involved in a scheme with 15 other fake pro-Trump electors in Georgia. They signed an “unofficial electorate certificate” in an attempt to undermine the Electoral College during the 2020 election. At that time, Jones held the position of a state senator.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, is in charge of a major case related to election interference involving Trump and 14 others. However, she was barred from investigating Jones in 2022. A judge in Fulton County ruled that Willis could not proceed with a case against Jones, whom she had referred to as a “target,” due to her hosting a fundraiser for his political opponent.
After nearly two years, Skandalakis finally decided to appoint himself to lead a potential case against Jones. As the director of the bipartisan group overseeing all prosecutors in the state, it was his responsibility to find a replacement for Willis to determine the next steps in the case.
Jones expressed his thoughts to CNN through a written statement, saying, "I'm glad to see progress in this process and I am eager to put an end to this charade. Fani Willis has once again made a joke of the legal system. I am looking forward to a swift resolution and getting back to the important work for the state of Georgia."

Editor's P/S:
The investigation into Lt. Gov. Burt Jones's alleged involvement in the 2020 election scheme is a significant development in the ongoing legal battle over election interference. The appointment of Peter Skandalakis as the lead prosecutor signals a bipartisan effort to hold those responsible for undermining the democratic process accountable. However, the political overtones of the case, with Willis being barred from investigating Jones due to perceived bias, raise concerns about the politicization of the justice system.
It is crucial for the investigation to be conducted impartially and thoroughly, ensuring that all evidence is considered and that no one is above the law. The outcome of this case will have implications for the integrity of future elections and the ability of prosecutors to pursue cases without political interference. The public deserves transparency and accountability in this matter, and it is essential that the investigation proceeds with the utmost integrity and fairness.
