What is Gen X?
Some might ask. Gen X is nickname of a generation with people born between 1960s to 1970s. However, it can be generally defined as the label attached to young adults who have reached adulthood in the late 20th century and early 21st century.
History of Gen X
Some people might ask about this, too. Many things have already been written down on the history of generation x, but I would like to summarize it in short here. First, Gen X began at late 50s to 60s after a generation called "Boomers" which led the youth in 1960s. During this time, America saw a huge cultural changes and became an important world power. After that came Gen X which had difficulties as young adults than Generation Y (Millennials). They experienced "stagflation" in 70s when economy went bad while inflation was high at that time which made them very difficult to live.
In 80s, they were helped by the "Silent Generation" members who had just retired from their jobs to restore economy and solve social problems such as drug abuse or high crime rates. Despite of all obstacles, Generation X has succeeded in getting higher education compared to a generation before them.
Characteristics of Gen X
As the generation that has been through a lot so far, Generation X is said to be more individualistic and self-reliant compared to the other ones. They are interested in creativity than conventionality or authority of institutions. When it comes to relationship with parents or elders, they prefer close relationships rather than services. Setting their own goals, they tend to go after things that inspire them. However, some might face a trouble of being too individualistic, which can sometimes interfere with working as a team or communicating well with others.
