Main findings:The 8GB variant of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti outperformed the 16GB variant in the majority of tested games, displaying marginal performance enhancements only in memory-intensive games.
Nvidia discreetly launched the 16GB variant without offering review samples or releasing drivers beforehand, thus delaying the publication of day 1 benchmarks.
MSI has now revealed the initial benchmarks for the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB GAMING X SLIM, indicating marginally lower performance compared to the 8GB version in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and F1 2023. However, the 16GB variant exhibited superior performance in CS:GO. To make a definitive assessment regarding the 16GB variant's performance, further reviews and benchmarks are necessary.
MSI has released the initial benchmarks for the controversial Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, and it showed lower performance compared to the 8GB version in most tested games. Nvidia quietly launched the latest version on July 18, showcasing minimal performance improvements except for memory-intensive games like A Plague Tale: Requiem.
Yesterday, Nvidia unveiled the 16GB variant of the RTX 4060 Ti without any day 1 benchmarks or performance comparisons, which came as no surprise. The semiconductor manufacturer remained low-key during the launch, leaving its board partners uncertain about the availability of the GPU. Additionally, they did not distribute review samples and only made the GeForce Game Ready drivers for the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB available on the launch day, preventing anyone from publishing benchmarks on the first day.

MSI, one of the board partners left in the dark about the launch, has now unveiled the first benchmarks for the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB GAMING X SLIM. Surprisingly, it performed slightly worse than the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti. During the MSI Insider weekly podcast, FPS numbers were showcased for Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra settings with ray tracing (RT) enabled. The 8GB variant achieved an average of 91.4 FPS, while the 16GB variant came in with an average of 90.56 FPS.
Similarly, in F1 2023 with Ultra settings and RT on, the 8GB variant reached 103 FPS, while the 16GB variant managed 101 FPS. Rainbow 6: Siege at Ultra settings demonstrated a 4 FPS difference between the 8GB and 16GB models, favoring the former. When it came to Fortnite (Epic settings with RT on) and Hogwarts Legacy (Ultra settings, DLSS, Frame Gen), the performance of the 8GB variant closely matched that of the 16GB variant, with just a slight lead in Fortnite.
CS:GO demonstrated significantly better performance on the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti compared to the 8GB variant. The 8GB achieved 419 FPS at 'Auto' settings, while the 16GB achieved 445 FPS. However, the impact of this difference on real-world gaming performance is negligible. Given that both variants have identical specifications, it was expected that the performance numbers would be similar to the 8GB version of the RTX 4060 Ti. Notably, the 16GB variant has a slightly higher TDP of 165W compared to the 8GB variant's 160W.
It is important to wait for more reviews and benchmarks of the 16GB variant before drawing any conclusions. MSI introduced the 'SLIM' lineup of GPUs at Computex this year, which includes all Nvidia RTX 40-series GPUs. The distinguishing feature of this lineup is that the cards are relatively slimmer compared to other board partner cards, although they still appear to be 2+ slot cards. Whether the slim design of the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti graphics card contributes to its underwhelming performance is yet to be determined.
