Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani expressed his pride in facilitating the repatriation of five US citizens who had been imprisoned in Iran. Al-Thani, speaking for the first time extensively about Qatar's involvement in the incident, stated, "We were immensely proud to witness Qatar's assistance in reuniting these individuals with their loved ones," during an exclusive interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.
Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz, and Siamak Namazi, along with two unidentified American individuals, were transported to a military airfield in Virginia on Tuesday. They had been flown out of Iran the day before on a Qatari government jet. This release was part of a larger agreement that involved the US unfreezing $6 billion in Iranian funds. CNN had previously reported that negotiations in Doha earlier this year paved the way for this development.
When asked about the potential impact of the deal on US-Iranian relations, Al-Thani expressed optimism, stating that he couldn't guarantee it would result in a nuclear deal but believed it would certainly improve the overall environment. He highlighted that the events of yesterday laid a solid foundation for rebuilding trust between the two nations.
"I hope that both countries believe this will pave the way for a comprehensive agreement on the nuclear issue, as well as any other unresolved matters," he stated.
The prisoner-release agreement, facilitated by Qatar, has emerged at a time when tensions between Iran and the US have noticeably decreased in recent months.
Iran and its proxies have significantly reduced attacks on US interests in the Middle East, while defying Western oil industry sanctions, they have managed to increase their oil exports. Additionally, there have been reports of a slowdown in Iran's uranium enrichment under its nuclear program. However, a senior Biden administration official stated earlier this week that the recent prisoner deal did not alter the relationship with Iran. Following the release of American prisoners, the Biden administration swiftly imposed new sanctions on the Iranian regime.
During their speeches at the UN General Assembly in New York, the Iranian and American leaders exchanged familiar accusations. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi blamed the US for aggravating the conflict in Ukraine and criticized the official withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) by former President Donald Trump in 2018, considering it a blatant disregard for their obligations.
Raisi emphasized that for progress to be made, the United States of America needs to clearly explain and prove its desire to reach a fair resolution and demonstrate its commitment. The country must make a decision, whether it is to remain in the JCPOA or not.
He further stated that the United States should stop following the incorrect route and instead opt for the correct path.
In his speech, US President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of working alongside international partners to tackle Iran's destabilizing activities, which pose a threat to both regional and global security. He reiterated the unwavering commitment of the United States to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
