Gabriel Attal, 34, Makes History as France's Youngest Prime Minister in Decades

French President Emmanuel Macron appoints 34-year-old Gabriel Attal as France's youngest prime minister in decades, reflecting a bold move towards youth leadership and fresh perspectives in the country's political landscape

Gabriel Attal, at 34 years old, has been appointed by French President Emmanuel Macron as the next prime minister of the country. He will be the youngest prime minister since the founding of the French Fifth Republic in 1958 and the first openly gay man to serve in this position.

Attal, a prominent member of Macron's Renaissance Party, has been serving as the Minister of Education and National Youth since July 2023. He has implemented a divisive ban on the wearing of the abaya in French public schools and has also focused on promoting awareness of bullying in schools.

"I trust in your dedication and enthusiasm," Macron posted on X, previously known as Twitter, after the announcement.

Prior to taking over the Education Ministry, Attal previously served as the government spokesman and later as the minister of public works and public accounts.

Attal has taken over the position from Elisabeth Borne, who stepped down from her role on Monday following a controversial 20-month term, which included an unpopular decision to increase the retirement age and urban unrest over the summer due to the shooting and death of a teenage boy of Algerian descent by the police.

Her departure was unsurprising, as it came ahead of a long-anticipated cabinet reshuffle.
