Zion Clark lives his life by the motto, "You don't need legs to leave your footprint on this planet." Since birth, the American has consistently defied the odds, overcoming every challenge in his path and leaving behind a proud legacy.

Born with a rare defect called Caudal Regression Syndrome that left him without legs, the 26-year-old has overcome numerous obstacles to achieve three Guinness World Records, win in his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut, and become a source of inspiration for millions worldwide. "I just like to enjoy myself," Clark explained to CNN Sport, when asked about his motivation to keep pushing his limits.

Early life

Many individuals find themselves trapped in the belief that they must adhere to the traditional 9-to-5 work routine. However, the truth is, when you discover something that truly brings you joy, the possibilities are endless.

Clark had a tough start in life, being given up for adoption at birth. He endured mental and physical abuse while bouncing between foster homes, leading to suicidal thoughts in his childhood.

Clark didn't find a loving family and the foundation to start building his life until he was 16. In an interview with CNN, the athlete chose not to dwell on the past and instead focused on discussing how he managed to turn things around.

Engaging in sports, especially wrestling, helped him navigate life's challenges. Wrestling instilled discipline, expanded his social circle, and boosted his self-worth as he learned to maneuver through life without the use of prosthetic legs, which he found uncomfortable.

The American says wrestling gave him a purpose which changed his life.

Inspired by wrestling, Clark began hitting the gym and underwent a significant transformation in his physique. Through years of dedicated training, he became a formidable competitor on the wrestling mat, consistently defeating fully abled athletes.

During his final year of high school, Clark completed the season with a 33-15 record, coming close to qualifying for the Ohio High School State Wrestling Championships. He continued his wrestling career at Kent State University, steadily improving and becoming a formidable opponent on the mat. Once he had his opponent pinned, it was rare for anyone to escape his hold.

Clark firmly believes that once you have engaged in wrestling, everything else in life seems easy. He affirms that wrestling is a sport for all, and anyone can join and find success with hard work and dedication. Finding peace and joy in a combat sport like wrestling can open up limitless opportunities.

Dreams of Paris 2024

The sky really was the limit for Clark, who wasnt content with just wrestling success.

Seeking out fresh challenges, he pushed his athletic abilities to the limit in new arenas, such as wheelchair racing and the gym.

Fearless in his pursuit of excellence, Clark committed himself to representing his country on the world stage, competing in both the Olympics as a wrestler and the Paralympics as a wheelchair racer.

He remains determined to qualify for Paris 2024 and is diligently pursuing an intense training regimen to turn his dream into a reality.

In addition to his Olympic and Paralympic aspirations, Clark has ventured into professional MMA. Impressively, he secured victory in his debut fight in 2022, defeating an able-bodied opponent. This achievement brought him recognition and ignited his desire for further success.

Clark has achieved three-time world records over the years: the fastest man on two hands, highest box jumps with the hands (33 inches), and the most diamond push-ups in three minutes (248).

Clark is determined to attempt breaking one of his records again next year, aiming to beat his previous time of 4.78 seconds for covering 20 meters with his hands.

"Who doesn't enjoy raising the bar? I've already set it quite high. Why not raise it even higher," he said with a smile, mentioning that he had to take some time off due to a hand injury earlier this year.

Speak to Clark now and you'll find a man filled with confidence, eager to learn, and unafraid to showcase his abilities. He's also not afraid of the camera, as he made it to the semifinals of Americas Got Talent this year, showcasing his physical and musical talents. In addition to all this, Clark can also play the piano, guitar, and drums.

When asked about his motivation for maintaining such high intensity in his life, Clark's response is straightforward.

"Nothing brings me more joy than landing a punch, beating someone in a race, executing a takedown on a mat, or spending hours making music on a drumset, piano, or guitar," he explained.

"It makes me happy first. You go back five, six years when I was doing all this, I wasnt making no money, but I was still doing it because it made me happy."

Finding a mentor

Clark has intentionally chosen to align himself with positive individuals as he navigates adulthood, with Craig Levinson being one of them. Their initial meeting took place backstage at the Ellen DeGeneres show and they have since embarked on numerous global adventures.

They immediately clicked, connecting over their mutual love for fitness and their desire to create positive change in the world. Now, Levinson is Clark's manager and has witnessed his friend's growth as an athlete and as a person.

"He has a youthful spirit, enjoying laughter, playing video games, and engaging in lighthearted banter. Outside of the spotlight, he is just an average person who prefers a modest and uncomplicated lifestyle," Levinson shared with CNN Sport.

"Growing up, developing trust with others was a challenge.

"Our strong connection originated from our friendship, where he could truly rely on me and be confident that I always have his best interests at heart, ready to assist him. We face both successes and failures together."

Clark is now a keynote speaker, sharing the lessons he has learned in life to inspire others. His public speeches are his way of giving back, motivating people to pursue their desires.

"In my speeches, I often emphasize that leaving a footprint on this planet doesn't require the use of legs," Clark explained. "It's both a literal and metaphorical statement, highlighting the fact that everyone has the ability to make an impact."

"Will you wait for an opportunity or create one? Either way, that's when you begin making your mark. Anyone can do it, no matter where you are."
