Both Joan Cusack and her brother, John Cusack, made brief but memorable appearances in the movie, which also featured a teenage love story. Reflecting on it, the cast of Sixteen Candles is amazed by the enduring popularity the film continues to enjoy.

Gedde Watanabe, who portrayed the foreign exchange student Long Duk Dong, expressed his astonishment at the movie's enduring success, describing it as "quite incredible" and unexpected.

"I'm still taken aback by it all," he shared with Vulture in May 2014, following an autograph show and screening alongside former costar Debbie Pollack, who played Long Duk Dong's girlfriend Marlene. "Given that it has been many years since the movie's release, and even several years since I have last watched it, I was anticipating only a couple of people to show up. However, when a large number of individuals attended, often accompanied by their children, and spoke about how much the movie meant to them, I feel both humbled and grateful."

Watanabe additionally recognized the significance of John Hughes, highlighting his movies, their lasting impact, and his exceptional talent. Sadly, his absence is deeply felt.

Similarly, Ringwald, in her essay for the New Yorker in April 2018, shared her affectionate memories of the late director. She recounted their initial meeting during the casting process of The Breakfast Club and how Hughes decided to shift his focus, ultimately crafting Sixteen Candles as his directorial debut instead.

"He later confided in me that during a July 4th weekend, as he skimmed through actor headshots for potential roles in the movie, he stumbled upon mine and was inspired to create an entirely new storyline revolving around the character he envisaged me to be," she recounted. "That very script ultimately materialized into Sixteen Candles, a captivating tale centered around a girl whose family tragically overlooks her sixteenth birthday."

The Riverdale actress commended Hughes for his extensive repertoire of movies featuring strong female protagonists. "In the realm of Hollywood, very few dared to delve into the intricate details of high school life, especially from a female perspective," she elaborated.

The Riverdale actress commended Hughes for his numerous contributions in writing films that featured strong female characters. "In Hollywood, nobody was delving into the intricacies of high school life, especially not from a female perspective," she elaborated.

Molly Ringwald

Ringwald took on the role of Samantha Baker, a 16-year-old girl whose birthday is forgotten by her parents, in the coming of age romantic comedy. She went on to star in several popular films such as The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, The Giving Tree, Jem and the Holograms, and the Kissing Booth franchise. In addition to her film career, the actress also made appearances on TV shows including Townies, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Raising Expectations, Riverdale, and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Outside of her acting work, Ringwald released two books. In 2010, she published her autobiography, titled Getting the Pretty Back, followed by her novel in stories, When It Happens to You, in 2012. Furthermore, in 2013, she released a jazz album called Except Sometimes.

Alongside these, he also portrayed memorable characters such as Rob Gordon in High Fidelity, Jonathan Trager in Serendipity, Jake in Must Love Dogs, Jack in The Bag Man, and Miller in Blood Money. Additionally, John has successfully produced over 10 projects, including Hot Tub Time Machine, and has written five films or screenplays, including High Fidelity. In 2020, he captivated audiences with his performance in Amazon Prime's Utopia.

John is the son of the late filmmaker Dick Cusack and the younger brother of actresses Joan Cusack and Ann Cusack.

Paul Dooley

Dooley played the role of Jim Baker, Sam's father, who was the first person to remember her birthday. He also had roles in Flashback, Shakes the Clown, Mother of the Bride, Clockwatchers, Runaway Bride, Insomnia, Hairspray, Other People, Saving Paradise, and voiced Sarge in the Cars franchise.
