The recently debuted trailer for Clockwork Revolution seems to share a similar tone with BioShock Infinite, developed by Irrational Games. Interestingly, a former trailer producer found the similarities to be a bit ironic. Clockwork Revolution, a first-person steampunk RPG, was unveiled during the Xbox 2023 Showcase and boasts time-bending powers and a protagonist who aims to alter the course of history for the city of Avalon.
Upon viewing the debut trailer for Clockwork Revolution, fans couldn't help but notice the similarities with BioShock Infinite, which was released back in 2013. Comparisons were quickly drawn, especially with the revolutionary storyline, the elite society, the presence of sky rails, mechanized enemies, and propaganda. These similarities were so striking that a person who claims to have worked on the production of BioShock Infinite took to Twitter to compare the two games.
After watching the reveal trailer for Clockwork Revolution, a Twitter user named Butmac, who claims to have produced three of the BioShock Infinite trailers, immediately experienced a flashback and produced a comparison between the two games. They noticed some interesting similarities, including the presence of a Daisy Fitzroy-like character sporting a scarf. Both games also feature propaganda claiming that enemies are everywhere, mech-style enemies reminiscent of the Big Daddies or Handy Man from previous BioShock games, and grand statues and sky rails in an opulent city.
Microsoft, who is publishing Clockwork Revolution alongside inXile entertainment, responded to the comparison. InXile studio head Brian Fargo clarified that Clockwork Revolution is a true RPG with a focus on stats, details, and deep reactivity, which the studio is known for in its previous role-playing games like Wasteland 3. Additionally, players will be able to fully customize the main character at the beginning of the game.
Clockwork Revolution could potentially serve as a satisfying placeholder for fans of the BioShock franchise, given the uncertain status of BioShock 4. Despite a lack of updates from 2K and Cloud Chamber, recent reports suggest that the development of the highly anticipated title has been plagued by internal issues, leading to multiple reboots and delays. It remains to be seen whether BioShock 4 will make its debut by 2025, leaving Clockwork Revolution as an enticing alternative. The game is currently in development and is set to release on PC and Xbox Series X platforms.
