Lovett gained recognition as a White House staffer under former President Barack Obama before becoming a host on "Pod Save America." He served as a speechwriter for Obama from 2009 to 2011, winning an anonymous contest to secure the position for the president's final speechwriter. However, Lovett only worked as a speechwriter during Obama's first term.

During a speech at Tufts University in 2012, Lovett shared his transition from comedy to politics, stating, "As quick as I decided to do comedy, I decided to go to politics. If my heart was really in it, I would have tried harder."

Lovett's career also includes a strong background in comedy. Prior to his venture into politics in Washington, D.C., he was involved in creating and producing the sitcom 1600 Penn in 2012, which aired on NBC for one season. Additionally, he has worked on writing and producing projects such as HBO's The Newsroom.

In 2016, President Barack Obama, along with former White House staffers Favreau and Tommy Vietor, started the company Crooked Media. Their first show was "Pod Save America."

Initially, in a 2022 interview, Lovett shared that they initially went their separate ways after leaving their political careers.

He added, "Yet, all of us, like Michael Corleone says in Godfather: Part III, ‘Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.’ We all felt this draw to stay involved, especially in 2016 when the stakes were total. So, we talked about, 'Should we do a TV show? What should we do? Should we do a podcast?'"

They were “frustrated” about how politics were being covered and wanted to create their own solution. “We decided we wanted it to have a different kind of show.”
