A former Naughty Dog developer recently compared a scene from Tom Cruise's newest film, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1, to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Though not explicitly stating that the movie drew inspiration from their game, the developer's post has sparked an intriguing conversation among fans.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, released in 2009, garnered critical acclaim and numerous Game of the Year awards. Reviewers and fans lauded Naughty Dog's storytelling and level design, which set a high standard for the developer's future projects. The game also established a new level of immersion in gaming and now, a former Naughty Dog developer believes that a scene in the latest Mission: Impossible film draws inspiration from one of Uncharted 2's standout sequences.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1. Bruce Straley, the co-director of Uncharted 2, recently posted pictures on Twitter comparing the train scene from the game to the sequence in Dead Reckoning. While Straley did not directly state that the scene was inspired by the game, he referred to it as "the sincerest form of flattery!" In Dead Reckoning, Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell can be seen attempting to climb a dangling train compartment, which is similar to a scene in Uncharted 2 where Nathan Drake does the same.
Straley's post gained significant attention from fans of both the movie and the game. However, opinions were divided among fans. Some immediately thought of Uncharted 2 when watching the scene in Dead Reckoning, while others noted that neither the movie nor the game were the originators of such a scene. One user pointed out similarities to a sequence from The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which was released in 1997. When asked about the video game, Dead Reckoning's director Christopher McQuarrie responded that he was unaware of it.
Aside from Mission: Impossible, Chris Hemsworth's Extraction 2 appears to have drawn inspiration from Uncharted 2 as well. In the Netflix film, there is an exhilarating continuous sequence that begins in a prison and culminates with Chris Hemsworth battling adversaries on top of a moving train, mirroring the gameplay in the video game. Notably, both sequences conclude with the trains derailing. Although this isn't a direct replication of a scene from Uncharted 2, it showcases the significant influence the game has had on various industries.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was initially launched for PS3.
