Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who was once considered a reform-minded candidate for the country's top leadership position, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in Shanghai on Friday, according to state media.
Li, who held the position as China's nominal second-in-command until October last year, served as the country's premier, responsible for overseeing the economy, for a decade from 2013 until March of this year under President Xi Jinping.
At the age of 68, Li experienced a heart attack on Thursday, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV. Despite attempts to revive him, he passed away at 12:10 am the next day.
This is a breaking story, more to come.
