Danielle Fishel, known for her role in Boy Meets World, has shared a disturbing experience involving a television executive. In a recent episode of her podcast Pod Meets World, Fishel discussed how she became an object of desire at a young age and recalled an inappropriate interaction with an unidentified TV executive. At 16 years old, Fishel did a calendar shoot and was shocked when the executive told her that he had a specific calendar month displayed in his bedroom.
As a child, I constantly yearned to be older, to be seen and treated as an adult. Therefore, receiving attention from adult men as a teenager did not strike me as creepy or strange. Instead, I viewed it as validation of my maturity, capability, and how they perceived me for who I truly was, rather than just a number on a page. However, looking back now, I realize how wrong this perspective was. It was inappropriate for me to be openly discussed and objectified at the ages of 14, 15, and 16, even when it was directed towards me. I had individuals inform me that they had marked my 18th birthday on their calendars. Furthermore, a male executive, while I was only 16, explicitly mentioned having a specific calendar month featuring me in his bedroom. These instances occurred between peers, and this was the manner in which they chose to interact with me. I lacked the ability to establish boundaries and had no expectations of how I should be spoken to or treated.
Boy Meets World May Have Been A Problematic Set
It's unclear whether the individual with whom Fishel had the unsettling encounter was affiliated with Boy Meets World as a producer or an executive at ABC or Disney. However, there is a history of inappropriate behavior occurring behind the scenes of the sitcom. Maitland Ward, who portrayed Rachel during seasons 6 and 7, has previously shared her negative experiences on the show. She was repeatedly asked to model lingerie for the producers. Ward specifically condemned Disney for their treatment of "girls like pieces of meat" on Boy Meets World and other shows during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Fishel has also shared other uncomfortable moments on Pod Meets World. One instance was when she discussed an episode where Cory and Topanga planned to have sex on the night of their senior prom. Strong was disappointed that the show did not include a conversation between the characters about safe sex. Fishel herself felt uncomfortable throughout the week due to similar concerns. These anecdotes shed light on the fact that, behind the scenes, Boy Meets World wasn't always as wholesome as the episodes portrayed.
