'Flip It to Win It' Star Charles 'Todd' Hill Receives 4-Year Jail Term for Financial Fraud

Charles 'Todd' Hill, known for his role on HGTV's 'Flip It to Win It,' has been sentenced to four years behind bars for engaging in financial fraud activities.

Former HGTV star Charles “Todd” Hill has been sentenced to four years in jail for committing real estate and financial fraud against 11 victims. The County of Santa Clara’s Office of the District Attorney announced the sentencing and also ordered Hill to pay back nearly $10 million to the victims.

Hill, known for his role on Flip It to Win It, was found guilty of multiple fraud charges last year related to incidents before and after the show aired in 2013. According to the District Attorney’s office, Hill used the money obtained through fraudulent schemes to rent an apartment in San Francisco, stay in hotels, go on vacations, and purchase luxury cars.

Following an investigation by the DA, the former TV personality was indicted in November 2019 for defrauding several individuals. In September 27, 2023, he pleaded guilty to grand theft and acknowledged the white-collar crime enhancements. As part of his sentence, he was required to repay $9,402,678.43 in restitution and placed on 10 years of probation.

Hill not only misused construction funds for personal gain but also operated a Ponzi scheme by falsifying balance sheets and obtaining loans with investor money. Another scam involved an investor who paid $250,000 for a home renovation, only to find it in ruins with no work completed.

During the court proceedings, victims of Hill's schemes testified to experiencing financial and professional losses due to his fraudulent actions.

Hill, along with other real estate professionals, appeared on HGTV's Flip It to Win It. The show, which aired in 2013 for one season, featured six teams competing to turn abandoned houses into attractive properties. Hill was paired with fellow renovator Michael Kaufman.

The show's description stated, "It's a high-stakes hour where three auctions are won, three houses are renovated, and then all three houses are put on the market for top dollar." The winning team of each episode was determined by who earned the highest profit from their renovation.
