Tempers flared and both benches cleared during Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) between the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers on Friday. The intensity reached its peak in the eighth inning when Bryan Abreu's 98.9 mph fastball struck Texas' Adolis García squarely on the shoulder.
García promptly released his bat and pivoted to address Houston catcher Martín Maldonado, sparking a verbal exchange between the two. This prompted both teams to rush onto the field as García and Maldonado had to be separated. Despite no punches being thrown, Abreu, García, and Houston manager Dusty Baker were all ejected following a delay lasting nearly 12 minutes.
García, speaking through a translator, explained that he simply responded to the ball that was directed at him. He expressed concern over the potential harm it could have caused, emphasizing that such incidents should be avoided.

In the heat of the moment, I instinctively responded to being struck by the pitch. My immediate reaction was towards [Maldonado], triggered by the impact. It was an incident that occurred in that particular moment.
García celebrated with a slow walk along the first-base line before spiking his bat into the turf after hitting a three-run homer two innings earlier. The 30-year-old took 30.5 seconds to jog around the bases, savoring the moment.
Abreu expressed his apology to García during the altercation, stating, "Sorry, it was unintentional."
With a thrilling three-run homer by Jose Altuve in the final inning, the Astros secured a remarkable 5-4 win in Game 5 of the ALCS. Now, with a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-seven series, they have triumphed in the past three games and are just one victory away from reaching the World Series.
Game 6 of the ALCS will be held at Minute Maid Park in Houston on Sunday.
The winner will face either the Philadelphia Phillies or the Arizona Cardinals in the World Series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have evened out the National League Championship Series (NLCS) against the Philadelphia Phillies by securing a 6-5 win in Game 4 at Chase Field on Friday. With back-to-back victories over the Phillies, the Diamondbacks now head into Game 5 in Phoenix on Saturday with the momentum in their favor.
