The French police have apprehended a man who is believed to have killed one person and wounded two others in central Paris, according to Frances Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin who spoke to reporters at the scene on Saturday night.
The incident took place at Bir Hakeim, close to the Eiffel Tower, and the suspect was reported to have used a knife and a hammer in the assault.
A German tourist who was born in the Philippines was killed in the attack, while two others sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to Darmanin. One of the responding police officers used a taser to neutralize the attacker, he added, and the suspect's life is not in danger.
Following his arrest, he expressed that he could no longer endure the sight of Muslims perishing in Afghanistan and Palestine," Darmanin recounted. Additionally, Darmanin mentioned that law enforcement informed him that the assailant had allegedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the attack.
Suspect was known to intelligence services
Videos taken at the scene showed police cars, ambulances and the Paris Fire Brigade arriving, with heavy traffic being diverted away. Numerous cordons were also set up.
The public has been advised to stay away from the area. Darmanin stated that the suspect is a French citizen born in 1997 and had previously served prison time for planning violent actions.
Darmanin did not provide further details but he said that the assailant was known to have serious mental problems by intelligence services.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
