At least 32 people have died and 16 others have been injured in a major fire at a drug rehabilitation center in northern Iran, according to reports from Iranian media on Friday.

The initial investigation revealed that a heater in the opium rehabilitation camp located in Langarud, Gilan province, near the Caspian Sea, was responsible for the fire. The flames quickly spread throughout the facility, as stated by the deputy governor of the province through the semi-official Fars news agency.

The Tasnim news site reported that the manager and other potential individuals responsible have been apprehended to facilitate a more precise determination of the incident's cause.

Iran has one of the most severe addiction issues in the world, as stated by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime.

It lies on the main trafficking route for poppy, the source of opium and heroin, from Afghanistan to Western Europe.
