Utah police are currently investigating the death of a man who entered the engine of a Delta Air Lines aircraft that was on the ground at Salt Lake City International Airport on Monday. The 30-year-old man, who remains unidentified, gained access to the secure ramp area of the airport through a terminal emergency exit. From there, he made his way to the south end of the airport's west runway where deicing operations were taking place, and proceeded to crawl into an aircraft engine that was not in operation.
The man was found unconscious by emergency responders and they were unable to revive him, the airport reported. It is currently unknown what injuries led to his death.
Delta Air Lines reported that Flight 2348, an Airbus A220 scheduled to depart for San Francisco, returned to the gate and all 95 passengers got off the plane. The flight was later canceled.
The airport police have stated that the incident did not affect any other airport operations. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently "collecting information" on the incident and has noted that the local police are leading the investigation.
