Farewell to a Legend: Joe Lewis Departs Aberdeen, Leaving a Legacy as Barry Robson Pays Tribute to a Football Icon

Aberdeen bids farewell to goalkeeper Joe Lewis after an impressive seven-year tenure, having made 271 appearances for the Dons His departure coincides with the club's recent signing of Ross Doohan on a two-year deal

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis is set to depart from Aberdeen after an impressive seven-year tenure, leaving manager Barry Robson to acknowledge his significant impact. Having arrived from Fulham in 2016, the 35-year-old showcased his skills in 271 appearances for the club.

He participated in three cup finals for the Dons and earned a spot in the PFA Scotland Team of the Season for 2016/17. Lewis held the position of number one goalkeeper under both Derek McInnes and Stephen Glass. However, he was relegated to the bench after Kelle Roos joined the team last summer.

Joe's departure follows Aberdeen's recent signing of goalkeeper Ross Doohan from Forest Green Rovers, securing a two-year contract. Manager Barry Robson expressed his admiration for Joe, acknowledging his immense presence and immense pride in his significant contributions to Aberdeen FC.

On and off the field, he has displayed exemplary leadership. Not only is he an exceptional goalkeeper, but he also embodies the qualities of a true professional, precisely the type of individual you desire in and around your team's locker room.

I would personally extend my gratitude to Joe and genuinely hope for his success in his future endeavors.

Lewis, who started his career at Norwich, admitted mixed feelings about his departure.

I have cherished countless wonderful memories here in Aberdeen, both on and off the field, and I have formed numerous valuable friendships within the club. Consequently, it's quite an emotional experience to be moving on. However, I have no regrets as I always gave my utmost effort whenever I donned the team's jersey, and I take immense pride in having captained the club and played a significant number of games.

The fans readily embraced me from the start, and over the past seven years, they have remained loyal through thick and thin. I want to sincerely express my gratitude to them. Moreover, the people of Aberdeen have been exceptionally welcoming to my family, so even though we will be departing the city, we will not be strangers.

"The club is currently in an incredible position, with numerous exciting prospects ahead. I have no doubt that I will return during this season to show my support for the team."
