Fans rally against critic to defend Godzilla's Rotten Tomatoes score

Godzilla fans unleash fury on critic responsible for shattering Rotten Tomatoes score of the blockbuster film, Minus One Find out what other critics have to say about this epic kaiju film

Fans are expressing their anger towards a critic whose unfavorable review of Godzilla Minus One caused the kaiju blockbuster to lose its perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. Godzilla Minus One, the 33rd installment in Toho Studios’ Godzilla canon, was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki and serves as a franchise reboot and reimagining of the original 1954 Godzilla movie.

Since its debut in Japan in November, the film has received an overwhelmingly positive reception. Director Gareth Edwards, known for 2014's Godzilla, even called Minus One "a candidate for the best Godzilla movie of all time." Professional critics also praised the film, with Godzilla Minus One holding a perfect 100% review score on Rotten Tomatoes - until now.

Godzilla fans pile on Minus One critic who ruined Rotten Tomatoes score

On November 30, critic Adam Olinger (host of the Adam Does Movies YouTube channel) published the initial unfavorable review of Godzilla Minus One, which was then included in the Rotten Tomatoes score. Consequently, the King of the Monsters’ latest cinematic adventure now holds a 98% rating.

Olinger encapsulated his less-than-positive opinion of Godzilla Minus One in the description of the video review. "I was eagerly anticipating this film as it appeared to be realistic and full of action," he stated. "However, what I ended up watching was a tedious character going through the motions while trying to confront this enormous creature. The pacing was off and overall it was very disappointing. What a shame."

Olinger's position on Godzilla Minus One did not sit well with fans, who expressed their displeasure in the comments. One response stated, "You put this film at a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, I will never forgive you. Godzilla Minus One is a masterpiece in every way possible." Another comment added, "Dude seriously just wanted to stand out in the reviews. There’s absolutely no way anyone could say this movie was a 'slog.'" A third commenter chimed in, "There’s always 'that guy' that needs to draw attention to himself because he lacks any real merit."

What are other critics saying about Godzilla Minus One?

Olinger’s review of Godzilla Minus One received a significant response, with many expressing their disagreement with the wider critical acclaim of the film. A brief look at other reviews on Rotten Tomatoes confirms this disparity, as they all overwhelmingly laud the 33rd Godzilla installment.

Variety's Richard Kuipers praised Takashi Yamazaki’s reboot for its return to the basics in a grand style, noting the engrossing human drama alongside spectacular mass destruction. Rolling Stone's Christopher Cruz described it as an artfully made throwback to kaiju classics and potentially the first Godzilla movie to elicit tears, recommending to see it on the largest screen available.

Editor's P/S

As a Godzilla fan, I am deeply disappointed by Adam Olinger's review of Godzilla Minus One. His criticism of the film being a "tedious slog" and "very disappointing" is not only unfair but also inaccurate. In my opinion, Godzilla Minus One is a thrilling and emotional rollercoaster that stays true to the spirit of the original 1954 film while also bringing something new to the franchise.

The film's visuals are stunning, the action sequences are intense, and the characters are well-developed and relatable. I highly recommend Godzilla Minus One to any fan of the franchise or anyone looking for an exciting and entertaining movie.
