Anime enthusiasts and voice actors united in support of a fan who endured a distressing encounter with school bullies that resulted in the destruction of his painstakingly crafted Chainsaw Man cosplay. James Fuller, a prolific writer across various genres, shared the heart-wrenching incident on X (previously known as Twitter), detailing how his son, Dante, had triumphed in his school's Halloween costume competition by beautifully portraying Denji, the protagonist from the popular manga/anime series. However, joy turned to torment as a group of classmates cruelly belittled Dante with derogatory slurs while obliterating his handmade costume.
Fuller shared pictures of Dante's costume, featuring a white t-shirt, black pants, a tie, and multiple chainsaws attached to his arms and head. His head was adorned with a red-and-black helmet, complete with long, sharp teeth. Additionally, the costume included a toy replica of Denji's original devil companion, Pochita. This attire closely resembled Denji's appearance in devil form from the anime, with his limbs and face transformed into large, weaponized chainsaws.
The post received an overwhelming response from fans, with over 2,000 people expressing sympathy for Dante and outrage towards the bullies who spoiled his cosplay. They praised his creativity and encouraged him to continue his artistic pursuits. Notably, Dante's story even caught the attention of several voice actors from the anime, including Natalia Van Sistine, who portrays the Fox Devil, a character that Fuller explains is his son's favorite.
Van Sistine voiced her support for his costume making skills and denounced bullying, praising him for his exceptional costume. She assured him that things will become easier as time goes on. Ryan Colt Levy, the voice actor for Denji in the anime's English dub, also responded to the post. He expressed sympathy for how Dante was treated by his peers and spoke on behalf of the entire cast in offering their support.
Fuller mentioned that Dante was overjoyed upon reading Levy's response, immediately saving it on his phone after his parents shared it with him. Both his parents and Dante noticed a significant improvement in his mood after seeing the message. Levy also promised to create a personal video addressing Dante's experience, although Fuller has not made the video public.
