The World of Poke Balls

As the icons of the Pokemon franchise, Poke Balls come in many different variants, and one fan has designed their own ball named the 'Sun Ball' to provide a counterpart to the popular Moon Ball that players can use to more easily catch certain Pokemon.

From creatures to regions and even new items, creative Pokemon fans have been bringing their own unofficial additions to life for decades, and so it's not too rare for new, fanmade Poke Ball designs to gain popularity among the franchise's community.

Practically everyone who's ever picked up a Pokemon game knows that Poke Balls are required to catch and befriend wild critters, but fans who haven't played any of the titles since some of the earlier generations may be surprised to discover just how many different types of Poke Ball there are.

Not every Pokemon is easy to catch, so Pokedex completionists often need to use the right tool for the job. Of course, there are Great Balls and Ultra Balls, which boast better successful catch rates all around, but items such as Dusk Balls offer even greater success rates in dark spaces like caves. The popular Quick Ball allows players to catch Pokemon without needing to weaken them first. There are even Beast Balls, devices that let Trainers catch Pokemon-like creatures from alien dimensions.

Those are just a few examples, and there are plenty more Poke Balls, each complete with their own aesthetics and perks.

The Creation of the Sun Ball

Artistic Pokemon fans often take to making their own Poke Balls, with one player going by the username sdrey showing off their custom Poke Ball design, which they have named the Sun Ball.

This creation is inspired by the existing Moon Ball, which has a boosted successful catch chance when targeting Pokemon that evolve with a Moon Stone, such as Clefairy, Jigglypuff, and Nidorino.

The Sun Ball would likely have a similar effect, but instead on Pokemon that evolve with a Sun Stone, such as Helioptile, Petilil, and Cottonee.

Many Pokemon fans have long found it strange that no similar Poke Balls officially exist in the games, with the Moon Ball being the only type of ball that has an elevated chance of catching Pokemon, which evolve via a certain stone. There's certainly room for new types of Poke Balls to exist which take advantage of the many different evolutionary methods seen across the many different species of Pokemon, and fans will likely see new variants of these devices appearing in future games.

The Future of Poke Balls

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have opened up new ways to obtain rare Poke Balls, as many fans like to catch some of their favorite creatures in the more colorful Poke Balls available.

One of the more popularly discussed features that players would like to see in future titles is the possibility of transferring their Pokemon into different Poke Balls, a possibility that would make the creatures even more customizable.
