Warning: The following content contains spoilers for Episode 7, "Modern Lady of Summer Flowers", of the TV show My Happy Marriage, currently available for streaming on Netflix.
In episode 7, titled "Modern Lady of Summer Flowers", we witness the aftermath of the intense explosions that occurred in episode 6. Both physically and metaphorically, we navigate through the ruins. This is where Miyu and the entire Saimori clan finally receive the closure they have long been awaiting. The house and the individuals who have caused Miyu immense pain and hardship are finally eliminated.
A Cinderella Story
Now that the dramatic ordeal is over, Miyu and her future husband, Kiyoka Kudou, can embark on their new journey with a newfound sense of joy. However, upon closer inspection of the final seven episodes, it becomes evident that the tale of Miyu Saimori bears a striking resemblance to Cinderella's story.Few dare to mention it, but the essence of a universally recognized fairytale can be found intricately woven throughout the narrative of the preceding seven episodes. It is the tale of an ill-fated princess, whose delicate feet were adorned by glass slippers - Cinderella.
A young innocent girl, grieving the loss of her mother, is forced to endure the torment of living with a wicked step-mother and step-sister. Her father, either ignorant or actively contributing to her suffering, allows her to be treated as a servant while the rest of the family lives in luxury. However, her life takes a turn when she crosses paths with a kind and influential man who recognizes her gentle and beautiful heart. True love finally finds her, though not without encountering numerous obstacles along the way. In the end, she is able to live happily ever after with her prince charming. Miyu Saimori truly embodies the Cinderella of feudal Japan.
It's important to note that this is not a critique of My Happy Marriage, but rather a commendation on its exceptional ability to incorporate a familiar tale into the backdrop of feudal Japan. By blending cultural settings, customs, and values while introducing elements of fantasy, this series manages to offer a unique and refreshing twist on the Cinderella story.
More Than Just A Cinderella Story
Cinderella, especially Disney's version, was intended as a fairy tale for children. Therefore, it adheres to the usual storytelling conventions for younger audiences, including a fast-paced narrative, easily graspable concepts, humorous and lighthearted moments, and other elements characteristic of this style of storytelling.
On the contrary, My Happy Marriage is the complete opposite of Disney's Cinderella in several ways. This series unfolds at a much slower pace than Cinderella, yet still manages to captivate viewers from beginning to end. Additionally, despite its incorporation of fantastical elements, the story remains firmly rooted in reality.
In addition to showcasing telekinesis and pyrokinetics, My Happy Marriage also portrays everyday activities like Miyu cooking rice, quietly sewing her clothes in her room, and her desire to express gratitude towards Kiyoka despite a lack of funds, leading her to create a personalized gift instead. These aspects greatly enhance the series' authenticity and plausibility. Furthermore, Miyu's introspective thoughts provide insights into her perspective, highlighting her tendency to self-blame for constant misfortunes, her pessimistic expectations, and her struggles with adapting to new surroundings.
The End of Cinderella Story
These elements contribute to the greater level of maturity in the story of My Happy Marriage compared to Cinderella. Despite sharing a similar origin story, Miyu and Cinderella diverge in their way of life and the narrative approach, elevating My Happy Marriage beyond a mere rehashing of the Cinderella tale.
As previously mentioned, episode 7 symbolizes the conclusion of Miyu and My Happy Marriage's fairy tale. Amidst the remnants of her childhood home, Miyu bids farewell to the harrowing encounters she endured there, ultimately finding the much-anticipated sense of closure.
As Miyu transitions into the next phase of her life, so does the narrative of My Happy Marriage, leaving the Cinderella storyline behind and embarking on a new story arc. The conclusion of episode 7 hints at an upcoming intensity that surpasses the initial part of the series. Without a doubt, we will continue to faithfully follow My Happy Marriage until its conclusion, eagerly anticipating that the next phase will be just as captivating as Miyu's Cinderella tale.
