A young innocent girl, grieving the loss of her mother, is forced to endure the torment of living with a wicked step-mother and step-sister. Her father, either ignorant or actively contributing to her suffering, allows her to be treated as a servant while the rest of the family lives in luxury. However, her life takes a turn when she crosses paths with a kind and influential man who recognizes her gentle and beautiful heart. True love finally finds her, though not without encountering numerous obstacles along the way. In the end, she is able to live happily ever after with her prince charming. Miyu Saimori truly embodies the Cinderella of feudal Japan.
It's important to note that this is not a critique of My Happy Marriage, but rather a commendation on its exceptional ability to incorporate a familiar tale into the backdrop of feudal Japan. More Than Just A Cinderella Story
Cinderella, especially Disney's version, was intended as a fairy tale for children. Therefore, it adheres to the usual storytelling conventions for younger audiences, including a fast-paced narrative, easily graspable concepts, humorous and lighthearted moments, and other elements characteristic of this style of storytelling.
On the contrary, My Happy Marriage is the complete opposite of Disney's Cinderella in several ways. This series unfolds at a much slower pace than Cinderella, yet still manages to captivate viewers from beginning to end. Additionally, despite its incorporation of fantastical elements, the story remains firmly rooted in reality.
In addition to showcasing telekinesis and pyrokinetics, My Happy Marriage also portrays everyday activities like Miyu cooking rice, quietly sewing her clothes in her room, and her desire to express gratitude towards Kiyoka despite a lack of funds, leading her to create a personalized gift instead. These aspects greatly enhance the series' authenticity and plausibility. Furthermore, Miyu's introspective thoughts provide insights into her perspective, highlighting her tendency to self-blame for constant misfortunes, her pessimistic expectations, and her struggles with adapting to new surroundings.
