Fable trailers
Our initial glimpse of Fable didn't provide any specific details about the story or gameplay, but it certainly established a certain atmosphere. The teaser showcased a fairy gracefully navigating through a picturesque fantasy forest, only to suddenly be devoured by a massive toad. This aligns with the trademark irreverent tone of the Fable series. Notably, the trailer simply identified the game as "Fable," hinting at the possibility of a reboot.

The release of a new Fable trailer took a few years, but we finally got a glimpse of what could be actual gameplay footage in June 2023 during the Xbox Games Showcase. However, as of now, there have been no updates on the game and it does not seem like it will be launching in 2024.

Fable release date and platforms
The actual release date for Fable remains unknown. Microsoft's website provides no specific date but does outline the compatible platforms for the game. Fable will be accessible on the Xbox Series X and Series S, as well as on PC. Considering that all first-party Microsoft titles are available on Game Pass at launch, it is likely that Fable will also be part of this subscription service.
It is worth noting that there is no mention of a Fable release on Xbox One. While this does not rule out the possibility of an Xbox One version, Xbox Games Marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg suggests that Fable may be designed for play on either Xbox Series X|S or PC, at least for native gameplay. However, with Microsoft introducing cloud support for Xbox One, there is a possibility that the game could be playable on last-gen hardware through this feature.
Who's making it?
The Fable series, originally created by Peter Molyneux's Lionhead Studios, came to an end when the studio closed in 2016, and the highly anticipated Fable Legends was cancelled. Since then, there has been no mainline entry in the Fable franchise since Fable 3 in 2010.
The new Fable title is being developed by Playground Games, known for their work on the Forza Horizon games. Despite being known for racing titles, the studio's expertise in creating vast open worlds bodes well for the upcoming Fable game. In 2017, Playground Games established a separate studio from the Horizon team to work on an undisclosed project, which has now been revealed to be the new Fable installment.
Anna Megill, lead writer of Remedy Entertainment's Control and narrative director of Arkane Studios' Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, has been announced as the head of the Fable writing team. The team includes notable individuals from Rocksteady, known for their work on the Batman: Arkham series. Martin Lancaster, the lead scriptwriter for Batman: Arkham Knight, will be the game's narrative director, alongside Rocksteady veterans Craig Owens, a former Batman script writer, and Martin Tan, the cinematic director.
Other members of the Fable team include chief designer Will Kennedy (GTA V), principal game designer Juan Fernández de Simón (Hellblade), and lead environmental artist Adam Olsson (The Division 2). Many team members also have experience working on the Forza Horizon series.
Playground may not initially appear to be the most obvious choice to develop a new Fable game, but Xbox boss Matt Booty believes that they are the right team for the job for a number of reasons.
"Playground showed a deep passion for the Fable franchise and proved that they understand the essence of what Fable is all about, and how to modernize it for today's audience," Booty explained. "I've been really impressed by what I've seen so far. They have a strong technological foundation and a clear dedication to creating a high-quality game. I had some doubts initially, but they have since proven me wrong and I'm excited for everyone to see it when we're ready to reveal it."
What's new in Fable?
A significant update regarding the new Fable is that it is set to utilize the Forza game engine. Turn 10 Studios, the creators of the Forza series, have put out a job listing for a software engineer to work on the ForzaTech engine, specifically to "support an open-world action RPG--Fable."
The new hire will also be responsible for implementing "new features like ray tracing" to enhance the game's visuals, which will "have a major impact on three AAA titles in development" within two other Xbox franchises.
The ForzaTech engine has a history of creating visually impressive games for Xbox, bringing to life realistic and vibrant worlds and vehicles. It is no surprise that Microsoft would want to utilize this technology to revive the Fable franchise as the development of the project progresses.
In early 2023, rumors surfaced that the new Fable game was being internally rebooted and may be transitioning from the ForzaTech engine to the Unreal Engine. However, journalists from Windows Central and gamesindustry.biz have debunked this rumor twice.
Tom Gaulton, a lead engineer at Playground Games, took to Twitter in November 2021 to celebrate his fourth anniversary at the studio, expressing his excitement for working on Fable during that time. This indicates that the new Fable has been in development for nearly seven years. Playground Games, owned by Microsoft, released Forza Horizon 5 in 2021, which was a huge success, setting player records for Xbox. With at least two internal development teams, it's possible that the new Fable will be worked on alongside a potential Forza Horizon 6.
Editor's P/S
As a passionate fan of the Fable series, I am thrilled about the upcoming revival of this beloved RPG franchise. The teaser trailer released in 2020 showcased the game's signature irreverent tone and hinted at a potential reboot, which has me eagerly anticipating more details. The recent gameplay footage revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023 further fueled my excitement, although the lack of updates since then and the absence of a confirmed 2024 release date have left me a bit disappointed.
Nevertheless, I remain optimistic that Playground Games, known for their exceptional work on the Forza Horizon series, will deliver a fresh and captivating Fable experience. The promise of innovative features and the potential for a reboot have me eagerly looking forward to any future trailers, release date announcements, and additional information about the game. I firmly believe that Fable has the potential to recapture the magic of the original games while also introducing new and exciting elements that will appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
