Sam Hargrave, the director of Extraction 2, has expressed his desire to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a director. Having previously worked on high-profile action projects such as the Hunger Games franchise, Captain America: Civil War, Deadpool 2, and both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Hargrave is no stranger to the superhero genre. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Hargrave revealed that he would love to direct an MCU project, although he did not disclose which characters he would like to work with. He also mentioned that he had previously been in talks to direct episodes of The Mandalorian but unfortunately, those discussions fell through for "different reasons."
I am open to the possibility of directing a Marvel movie. While I have had some discussions with Marvel/Disney in the past, particularly in relation to The Mandalorian, nothing came to fruition. However, I am not opposed to the idea of being approached in the future. For me, the most important aspect would be finding a character with a unique and specific point of view that I could bring something additive to. I would not want to simply rehash what has already been done, as the canon of films they have created is so iconic. If I were to take on a Marvel project, I would want to bring something special and unique to that world. I have some ideas, and would love the opportunity to discuss them further with Marvel. If anything comes to light, you will definitely be the first to know.
Why Hargrave Is Perfect For The MCU
Not only is the new director experienced in the franchise, but Hargrave has also contributed to some of the most iconic and memorable sequences in the MCU. The airport battle in Captain America: Civil War, which is still talked about today, and the intense three-way fight between Captain America, Iron Man, and Winter Soldier are just a few examples. Additionally, the culmination of character arcs and the thrilling back-and-forth in the fight between Thor, Captain America, and Thanos in Avengers: Endgame is a definite crowd-pleaser.
Hargrave's expertise in hard-hitting action was evident even beyond the MCU, as seen in his work on films like Atomic Blonde and The Accountant. Drawing from his past projects, the Extraction movies successfully blend minor CGI effects with practical action to maintain a gripping, fast-paced narrative.
Given the MCU's tendency towards relying heavily on CGI for major set pieces, hiring Hargrave to direct a film presents an opportunity to infuse the franchise with a greater sense of realism. With the prospect of other street-level heroes receiving solo projects in the future, it would be intriguing to see how Hargrave would handle directing a character like Jon Bernthal's Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again.
