Explosive Fallout: Van Dijk's Shocking Red Card Reaction Leads to Extended Ban

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's defender, faces an additional one-game suspension and a hefty £100,000 fine for his improper reaction after being red-carded against Newcastle Consequently, he will miss the upcoming Premier League match against Wolves

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk has faced further consequences for his misconduct during the match against Newcastle last month. In addition to his initial suspension, he has been given a one-match ban and fined £100,000. Van Dijk admitted to behaving improperly and using abusive and insulting language towards the match official, referee John Brooks, after being sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak in the first half of Liverpool's 2-1 win at St James' Park on August 27.

The centre-back was handed an automatic one-match ban for the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa following the international break. However, in addition to this, he will now also miss the trip to Wolves on September 16 due to an additional suspension. The FA released a statement, stating that Virgil van Dijk has been fined £100,000 and suspended for one match for breaking FA Rule E3.1 during Liverpool's Premier League game against Newcastle on Sunday, August 27.

"The defender acknowledged his wrongdoing by behaving inappropriately and using offensive and derogatory language towards a match official after receiving a red card in the 29th minute. Consequently, an independent regulatory commission imposed the subsequent penalties."

Van Dijk told Dutch reporters following the Netherlands' win over Greece on Thursday that it was out of character.

"That was not typical for me," he said.

Ref Watch on Van Dijk incident

In any case, the red card was awarded to me. Throughout my entire career, this was a rare occurrence, and I had never received one before during my time at Liverpool. However, despite that setback, I had still commenced the season on a positive note.

Should Van Dijk have been sent off?

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher:

"I think it's a foul.

"Has he got an obvious goalscoring opportunity? Is he in possession of the ball. Yes, there's no doubt about that.

"Will he have a clear run on goal? Well, once he gets the ball he's going to move towards the goal.

"Is he outside the penalty area? Yes, so the referee has to send him off.

"He gets the ball but he gets the man first, there's no doubt about that.

"I don't think anybody can dispute it's a foul."

Could Van Dijk be in further trouble for behaviour after red card?

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher:

It will vary based on the referee's reports.

Without a doubt, he took a significant amount of time to exit the field. Therefore, we must wait for the referee's written account of the incident in his report that will be sent to the FA. Once that is resolved, things will become clearer.
