The collaboration between Neverwinter and Idle Champions in 2021 introduced Sgt. Knox, and Idle Champions has also incorporated origin characters from Baldur's Gate 3. Could you explain the process behind initiating these collaborations? Is there frequent communication between the teams as they work on their respective projects?

Mus’e: The process of collaborating on our Champions requires extensive communication among all parties involved. It begins with an initial discussion with the creators of the character to gather the necessary details for transforming a beloved and established character into a Champion. We then progress to various artistic and design elements, which require approvals to ensure they stay true to the essence of the original character. Additionally, we consider how the Champion will interact with other Champions in the game, as well as finer details such as essential equipment and even dialogue text that contribute to the overall presentation of the Champion.

Everyone involved in the development of Idle Champions' Champions plays a vital role in the overall process. We collaborate closely with both the creator(s) and each other over the course of several months to ensure a smooth and successful launch that stays true to the original character concept. This extensive process requires a significant investment of time and effort, making the official launch during one of our featured events throughout the year an incredibly exciting moment.

Idle Champions differentiates itself from typical idle games by leveraging the rich world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). Through its adventures, characters, and events, the game immerses players in the sprawling city of Waterdeep, the frosty plains of Icewind Dale, and the misty forests of Barovia, exploring every corner of the Forgotten Realms and beyond. Extensive use of iconic D&D characters, such as Drizzt Do'Urden, along with lesser-known figures like Dungeon Master from the 1980s D&D cartoon series, adds depth and familiarity for those with knowledge of the D&D universe. While the power levels may not match those in traditional tabletop D&D, the essence of the game remains true to its origins.

Idle Champions is a fun idle game that defies its genre's typical lack of player engagement. It manages to attract a considerable number of players, but what makes an idle game enjoyable? Are there certain core concepts or systems that keep players interested?

In Idle Champions, we ensure that players stay engaged through our continuous and consistent live service. We regularly introduce fresh content every week, guaranteeing that there is always something new to experience. To keep the game's "formation" system exciting, we introduce a new Champion approximately every 3 weeks. This not only refreshes the meta but also brings forth thrilling new combinations that players can utilize to further their progress. No matter how much you have accomplished in Idle Champions, the game never becomes monotonous. Wait only a week, and you will find new challenges awaiting you.

How do you choose which character to introduce and how do you establish their abilities, especially when collaborating with Neverwinter?

Lee and Mus’e: Every year, we introduce 17 new event Champions, constantly on the lookout for characters that resonate with our players. Our inspiration comes from various sources. Sometimes, we delve into the depths of D&D lore to find captivating characters that appeal to D&D players. Other times, we collaborate with content creators from popular D&D Actual Plays, bringing their beloved favorites into the game as Champions.

Furthermore, we seize opportunities to collaborate with other licensed D&D video games, such as Neverwinter and Baldur’s Gate 3. This provides our players with yet another way to enjoy a diverse range of characters within our game. Whether it's through an official D&D campaign or by partnering with creators renowned for their memorable characters, our aim is to offer exciting Champions for players to choose from and enhance their gameplay experience.

When creating the mechanics for Idle Champions, we take into account various factors to design the characters. This includes their class, ability scores, and defining features like a unique spell, item, or special power. These aspects serve as inspiration for their attacks or formation abilities. For characters with intricate backstories, we strive to hint at certain elements without giving away major plot developments. Additionally, if they fulfill specific roles within a party, such as being a tank or healer, we ensure that the Champion's design reflects their intended function in Idle Champions.

Idle Champions often groups characters together in an Affiliation, such as Drizzt's Companions of the Hall or Lae'zel's Absolute Adversaries. We strive to enhance the synergy between Champions from the same Affiliation, considering a character's role within that group to determine their capabilities. For instance, if a specific Champion serves as the primary damage dealer, we make sure that all other members of the affiliation excel at supporting that Champion in some manner.

A: As Idle Champions collaborates with Baldur's Gate 3, can players anticipate the addition of characters such as Astarion to their idle rosters?

Mus’e: Fortunately, Astarion is already part of our Champion roster! We were delighted to introduce him in-game during our annual Brightswords event in September. Players who wish to include previously released Champions can utilize our Time Gate Weekends or make use of Time Gate Pieces to unlock the Champions they desire.

We're delighted to offer your readers an opportunity to unlock Astarion and 1 Gold Astarion Gold in Idle Champions using the code GAME-RANT-STAR. This offer is valid until November 17th, 11:59 PM PT.
