Exploring Intrigue and Romance in a Tennis Setting

Just like in tennis where 'love' means nothing, the drama in 'Challengers' unfolds in a complex psychological triangle set against the backdrop of the sport. Dive into the twists and turns that keep you hooked until the final match point, even if the ending falls short.

In tennis, the term "love" doesn't actually mean anything. Similarly, in the movie "Challengers," the sport serves as a backdrop for a complex psychological triangle that keeps viewers engaged with its twists and turns, although it falls short at the end.

Director Luca Guadagnino, known for "Call Me By Your Name," once again explores themes of seduction and sex in this film. With the central character, played by Zendaya, striving for control and victory, the movie delves into how her elite athlete mentality impacts her personal relationships, while also touching on themes of fate and missed opportunities.

The framing device of the story revolves around a singles match between Art (played by Mike Faist from "West Side Story") and Patrick (played by Josh O'Connor from "The Crown"). Art is a decorated superstar who may feel like his tournament-winning career is coming to an end. On the other hand, Patrick arrives at a lesser-known tournament where they face off in a run-down car that doubles as his hotel room due to his financial situation.

Looking back 13 years, we learn that Art and Patrick were close friends as junior tennis players. They both became infatuated with Tashi, a talented rising star played by Zendaya. Tashi's game on the court and her striking appearance caught the attention and admiration of both Art and Patrick, sparking a sense of competition between them.

Back in the present, Tashi is Art’s wife and coach. She had to give up her own career due to a serious knee injury. It's clear that she is deeply invested in Art's success, with Art even acknowledging that he is playing for both of them. This dynamic adds an interesting layer to their relationship and makes the outcome of Art and Patrick's lengthy match even more compelling.

"Challengers" is not just about sexual tension, but also about the blurred lines between sex and the allure of professional sports. Success and winning are portrayed as the ultimate turn-ons in the movie, with two characters being upfront about their desires. However, Tashi's character remains mysterious due to the unexpected path her career has taken.

Guadagnino's latest film, "Challengers," takes a departure from his previous work on "Bones and All." This time, he collaborates with playwright Justin Kuritzkes on a more conventional and commercially appealing project. However, Guadagnino still manages to inject his signature style by adding a touch of sensuality to the tennis scenes.

Despite the dynamic camera angles and fast-paced action on the court, the abundance of tennis sequences in the film may overwhelm those unfamiliar with the sport. Even if the sport is used as a metaphor, "Challengers" could prove to be a bit challenging for viewers expecting to see the characters face different trials and tribulations.

Zendaya's character Tashi stands out as the most intriguing in the film, thanks to her complex angles and occasional moments of frustration. Despite this, the details about all three main characters remain somewhat unclear due to the film's structure.

The build-up in the movie is effective, but the payoff feels overly precious and ultimately unsatisfying. This misstep doesn't take away from the overall well-choreographed match, but it's like a tennis unforced error that keeps Guadagnino's latest film from being a complete success.

Challengerspremieres April 26 in US theaters. It’s rated R.
